I have a chance to pick up a full set of slotted rotors from a 92 J55 car.
It looks like the rear rotors are the same on base and J55 cars but the fronts should be 12.9" for J55.
Looks like the first order of business is to pull a front wheel and measure the diameter of the caliper.
If I find that I have base brakes then what used parts do I have to buy in order to make the change? Of course I would buy all new pads. Will the J55 calipers bolt up to the base bracket or not?

J55 is both bigger in diameter and thicker.

It will require new calipers and brackets to make 100% right.

I assume the car does not have J55? Check the list, of course.

If you go looking for calipers, then get the GS calipers. The are thicker and stronger than even the ZR1 calipers.

I agree with Andy. However, you have another option too and that is doing a C5 front brake upgrade. I did the aforementioned Grand Sport Caliper upgrade with new brackets, calipers, rotors, SS lines, and new performance pads and loved the results, however I think the C5 conversion is actually less expensive than the GS conversion. I know the C5 calipers are less expensive, but not sure about the rest of the components. Either way you decide, you will be astonished by the difference in size between the two rotors. Its a nice upgrade that you WILL actually feel the difference immediately.

I would personally do a c5/c6 upgrade. Get ahold of Jeffvette, he sells the adapters. I have one of his and they are great.

But you need a wheel upgrade ,
17" sawblades won't clear C5 calipers so you need A Molds as a min

Hmmm. So - purchase the adaptors from Jeffvette and then buy 2 front brake assemblies off a C5 wreck. I will look into this.
I will add it to my lengthening wish list. The brakes actually work great as they are now. I really want to fill the void behind my new Fikse wheels.

I am not sure if the Fiske's, or my American racing TTII's, will clear the C5 brakes. I wish I knew...

There is a minor fix that can be done to the calipers - grind off a bit of the cooling fins.

For those of you with the J55's, just saw this on the CF:

FYI: Found these Mintex Xtreme Racing Brake Pads FRONT for $27.38, I have no affiliation with this vendor, just thought it was a bargain.

I don't know anything about brakes, but never heard of this manufacturer. Are these good? How do they rate against CarboTech and the like?

Thought the name looked familier.

I wonder if PBR is somehow associated?
