Howdy!

I just had the vette (93LT1) transported from MO back to NC a few weeks ago. The car was transported in an enclosed 53ft trailer along with the rest of our household goods.

Yesterday, I fire it up and the digital gauge (speedo)starts going crazy. It's blinking on and off, and then starts cycling through all the settings at warp speed. Smack the dash and it stops for a few seconds, then starts again..

I'm thinking the IP may have been knocked loose during transport. If I understand correctly, if there was a problem with the ECM, smacking the dash wouldn't make a difference due to the location, etc, of the ECM itself, correct?

One other problem...I replaced the coolant temp sensor for the digital readout due to a H15 code, and the secondary fan turning on at ignition.
Didn't work...Still get the code and the fan still comes on.
Bad sensor out of the box--maybe wiring harness to sensor?

I've taken the dash out before when I replaced the heater core, but I don't think it's that involved to get the IP removed..Do remember dropping the steering wheel, etc...
Service Manuals are MIA...Probably in one of the unmarked boxes I've yet to open... Ugh....

I am hoping that removing the IP and checking connections, etc, will resolve issue... Any suggestions/advice/ideas?!

Thanks!!

I hate to take you back to an old CF article but I just ran across this the other day when I was looking for something else. It explains the whole IP removal process.

That moving truck must have some crappy suspension if it knocked your wiring loose. I would think that between the trucks suspension and your car's suspension there would be adequate damping of irregular road surface.

That sucks, D.
IMO, transport probably didn't have anything to do with it.

Sounds like wiring/grounds.

On the fan coming on - swap relays, does the primary fan come on now? If so, may be a harness problem where it's grounding the relay. The CTS doesn't turn the fan on, it just sends cooling temp (voltage) signals to the ECM and the ECM thru Quad Driver circuit #3 does the actual grounding of the relay to turn the fan on. The power at the relays is always hot (key on)and the relays turn on when grounded.
No easy way to check the sensor without a Tech 1, jumping the harness won't display the 130+ degrees like it's supposed to with a Tech 1, IIRC.

You could pull the CTS and check it with an ohm meter just to see if there's current flow thru it.

Code 15 will also set if there's a harness problem so I'd look at the yellow & black wires from the CTS to the ECM.

Thanks Guys!
Hopefully the dash problem is just a loose connection--
I'll swap relays and check wiring harness for the CTS code..

How's your battery doing? I know smacking something with results usually points you to something... but could be a voltage issue, even if it's strong enough to crank the car over they battery could be on it's way out.. they cause all types of goofy problems..

Yea, very true if there's a problem with the battery or the batt cables.

Also note that a battery doesen't necessarly need 12.5 volts to start the car and run properly. Mine's been starting with 11 volts for 3 years with no problems but I'm getting a new one soon.

Well, the battery is only a little over a year old, but it hasn't seen much use...
I started it up last night to see if the digital gauge would start that spin cycle agin, but it didn't. Of course, I didn't drive it so there was no vibration, etc.
The check engine light did come on, and the water temp (cold) was 140 on the readout..
It did this to me before about 2 years ago, and when I changed the CTS all was good..

You started it the other night, but how long has it been since it was started/driven last?

I ask because if it has been stored at the movers for a few weeks, I start to worry about rodent intrusion. Mice will wreck havoc on a cars wiring harness.

Also, the ECM is under the hood... there is no way that whacking the dash is going to have a cause/effect on the PCM. Or the CCM for that matter. Sure, it's in the dash, but down behind the radio and rubber isolated at that.

I think it is time to start taking the dash apart, and be ready with a camera...the moving/storage firm may just be liable for this. Unless it's been sitting in your garage at your old home since you moeved east.

Hi Andy!

I drove it from the old house in MO to the warehouse with no issues. (besides sliding on ice/snow covered roads!) It only sat there for 1 day before it was loaded on the transport..

When I picked it up at the warehouse in Wilmington, it drove fine..No issues..

Funky stuff happened when I fired it up on Sunday to clean it up.

Now, it did sit while we were in MO, but I started it every week or so and let it run for a while...
Actually drove it to work a time or two a few weeks before I moved..

I'm going to pull the IP out this weekend and have a look/see..
Wish I could find my damn FSM's...With that packing crew, it's no telling where they'll turn up...
