The stock L-98 was taken out in July 2009, and the 421 was dropped in its place. I still cant believe it was that long ago, but such is life.

Most of you know how busy I have been the last several years hence why the car has not been top priority. I am even suprised that it has come this far.

Fast forward to April 2011, and the car has finally been started, and I absolutely love the sound of it. It idles at around 750 rpm which is a tad bit low I think. The tune is not bang on, but I believe its somewhat close. My engine builder Jim Barth who is a respected forum member of the CF will be flying in near the end of May to assist me in tuning this monster.

Originally when the 421 was first started the amount of blue smoke due to the start up lube, and the timing being off was certainly a stressful moment being the first high performance motor that I have had built for me. But after I got someone who was experienced in the FAST system, and the way I had it setup, the blue smoke went away at idle, and the idle its self calmed down, and my mind was eased a wee bit. If the motor was damaged in any way because of how much fuel was being dumped down on initial start up, I certainly would not be building another one. I doubt washing the rings wouldnt be a good thing.

The roads are still a little dusty so I wont be driving the car just yet, and it might still snow yet. The airfuel on the FAST on idle is in the safe range, but like I said it will need to be fine tuned, and I will be throwing it on the dyno in May for chits and giggles when Jim flys north to Canuckville.

Anyways here is a little video of the 421. I am sure I will have my issues, but if it goes like it sounds then I will be a happy camper and the wait will be worth it!

It sounds better in person, but I figured a video is better then nothing!

More vids to come down the road. Take care guys!

Congrats on getting it started up after a long process! Idle sounds nice. I wouldn't be concerned about washing the rings or ruining the motor with a few starts.

Congrats on getting it running. I know you've been working on it a long time.

Should run good once the Engine Management is tuned.

Awesome! Can't wait to hear your review after driving it for a while. I know this wasn't built for dragstrip use but I have a feeling after blistering the tires on the street you will be at the track before the end of the year.

Didn't do much this winter. I put on 1.7 rockers and a 3 row aluminum radiator. Just had it out the other day for the first time this year. It is running great. Had to change the tune more than expected going to the 1.7's so I'm still tweaking the part throttle tune but WOT is spot on.

I did just buy a set of 9.5" polished aluminum ZR1 style 5 spoke wheels. I can't wait to receive them and get them put on. I'm going to keep the stock sawblades but I am ready for a change in appearance.

Not much on the list for summer, needs an alignment with a hair less rear camber, maybe a new dash top, and possibly a water/meth injection kit late in the year. I am looking forward to a summer of driving the vette instead of a summer of working on it!

Update:

Car pulls really well and most important is very smooth hence the top notch machining.

I only have about 450 miles on the 421, but its fair to say that the rings are seated nicely.

I had a bit of a rough start up tune but after TPI421Vette flew in for 5 days to help me out we smoothed out hat tune.

I haven't had the car down the 1320 because I still have the 4 plus 3 in the car and the 3.07's, but I will attend the track when the ZF and 3.45's are installed and see where it sits in the 11's (all depends on me).

I will be putting the car on the dynojet next month but I will say that it pulls harder then Fords bigdog 2011 GT500.

Hope all is well with the Guru crew.

I will post the newer start up and idle video soon. The idle has certainly smoothed out and I am pleasantly suprised how good on fuel the car is but I think the small heads help out with that.

Later.

Sounds like a sweet setup.

Keep us updated I am very interested in what HP you put down and how well it runs.

I have an 85 with 406", as cast tricflow 195s and 10:5 CR with flat tappet xfi cam, miniram and a well built 700 with 3600 stall and 3.08s and drag radials.

Car runs mid 12s in calgary.

In retrospect, my "off the showroom" 2011 gt500 ran low 13s with poor traction in same city. Shelby needs some tires, but ....

In the future I want to build a 427 sbc with similar parts to what you have for the 85.

Yeah the GT500 only has 285's I believe on the rear but on a roll tires aren't really as important as from a dig.

What mph did your C4 and Ford trap in the 1320?

Also tell me more about your stroker? And if you ever want to upgrade those as cast TFS let me know as I can get you a good deal on some AFR's. I used to have some TFS 195's Kenny D's that flowed max 260 cfm at .600 lift. Your 406 is begging for more especially with that miniram....

Take care!

Igor,

It feels like its in the ballpark of 450 at the tire in both hp and tq. I have a feeling it won't be a dyno queen but "might" be quicker then cars with more hp. Power under the curve.

The vette is usually 109mph fairly consistent.

The mustang would do 111-113. Keep in mind Calgary really sucks for air/ETs.

The problem on the shelby is traction. It has none. So mph isn't as good as it could be because it takes so long to get going properly. And very inconsistent. This is with STOCK tires in Calgary.

The 85 is much lighter, and has drag radials, hence its better time with less mph.

The 406 is pretty lame really, its a stock 2 bolt '76 block, with stock crank, stock 350 (5.7" rods) and some weisco pro-tru pistons. There is nothing special here.

The heads are out of the box with lightened up spring pressure to run a 268 xfi flat tappet hydraulic cam.

I had this motor from days of past and decided to use it. It was build long ago but never assembled 'till I put it in the vette. It works really good, but once it start to puke I want to have a backup.

As for heads, I was thinking of having TEA port my 195 trick flows, and using a fairly stout hydro roller. Possibly thinking about solid roller.

Before anything, I need to upgrade to 3.73 dana 44 rear end, and some bigger tube headers and dual 3" (currently have 1 5/8"s LTs and dual 2.5").

The car is running on EZ-EFI MPI version, and I don't know how much power it leaves on the table vs. more tunable units, but I do know that the thing works as advertised. Easy to hook up, easy to use, consistent and still makes good power. So i really would like to make my future motor work with this. Even if it leaves a few ponies on the table, the ease of use is worth it to me.

Dynoed the car today. I am tired so I will post the results later....

I think it did pretty well with the 195's.
