How do I get a stripped out lug nut off. It seams to be held on be just one thread. I can wiggle it up and down, but it will not come off. Suggestions?

it's just at the end of the thread? I would try a small gear puller... or a pair of pliers to see if you can pull it off whilst turning.

If nothing else, you will need to replace the stud and lug it sounds like. Both are rather cheap parts, tho.

Depends; impact wrench, chisel, nut cutter, or they make some special tools just for that situation, they are all different though, just need to be patient and keep working at it...

Try some needle nose vise grips. Those have worked well for me in situations like that. Other suggestions above, too.

Wellllll, been there done that with exactly the same thing (the nut will wiggle up and down).

Are trying to do it with screwing up the wheel around the lugnut hole, Andy?

I tried every thing, needle nose vicegrips, 5 kinds of needle nose, chisel, etc. Even thought about welding a stud on the nut and using my slide hammer.

The problem (as you know) is that there's no room between the nut and the wheel. No way to get a good grip on the nut.

There's only one thing to do, drill it out. It sucks and takes a couple hours. Obviously, you have to start with a small bit, less that 1/8th and the first hole has to be parallel & square to the stud. The hole has to be as deep as the nut length. Keep moving up in size until you are cutting the threads on the nut.
This is a bitch, took me 2-3 hours IIRC and had to sharpen the bits often.

The only good thing is that you can replace the stud on the car using a 6 inch C-clamp with a handle extender (piece pf pipe) and various sockets.
Installing the new stud - a deepwell socket with a lugnut put on backwards so that the flat face of the lugnut is against the socket.

You may get lucky and get that nut off another way but, I dought it only because I've been thru this.

I've had a few of those before also!
The method I've used has worked for me several times.
I remove all the lug nuts, leaving only the stripped one. Using a pry bar or something to get behind the wheel and apply pressure outboard at the same location as the lug nut. This will push the wheel against the lug nut and sometimes enough to get the nut to grab enough threads to back out. You will need to use a thin wall socket for the lug nut instead of a regular lug wrench.
A helper with a strong back would be good also.

Definately worth a try, I forgot that I tried that including spinning the nut while prying. Didn't work for me but certainly may work on some of them.

Thanks guys. I got it off this morning. It was far enough out that I was able to get something behind it for pressure and then twisted, wiggled, turned, etc and it finally came off. Bad news is the fairly new C6ZR1 wheels is trash. The stud holes are wallowed out enough that I don't trust it.

This is on my son's C5. He was called back to his base yesterday and only got to north side of Atlanta when he felt it and pulled over. Three studs sheared off, one nut half off, and only one nut (the problem one) holding the wheel on. We are thinking someone might have been trying to steal his wheel(s) and only got as far as loosening the lugnuts before being scared off.

I got the hub off and all of the studs out. Five new studs and nuts will be here tomorrow and a new wheel should be here Friday. Fortunately he has AAA which covered the towing and we have an extra car for a loaner.

Thanks Again,
Andy

Sounds like its time for locking lug nuts. That sucks.

I was also wondering if someone had used anti-seize and over torqued them...

Most importantly, your son is ok!!! A friend had some lugs shear off, tore up his front fender and almost the car.
