OK Steve,

First get 60 used beer bottles......Suggest you empty them yourself.Smilie

Then fill your bathtub with water and add one gallon of bleach.

Put the 60 bottles in the tub.laughing9

Seriously, do a search for a supplier in your city, it's way better to have an expert to talk to rather than buying ingredients on the web.

Get a book on homebrewing to get started.

Figure on getting a keg system, the 5 gal Cornelius (Coke syrup tanks) are not bad in price. Using bottles is a real pain in the ass.

Do a search on Amazon just for the hell of it, they have these systems.

Google "home brewing", it's everywhere.

Steve,

There is a ton of information on the web in regards to home brewing. A good place to start could be at Basic Brewing Radio.com --- He has a bunch of archived podcasts from way back and some of the very first shows go into the basics of home brewing. Also, Homebrewtalk.com is a great resource of information from beginners to experienced craft brewers.

In it's simplest form, brewing is essentially making a tea/boil from grains like barley, wheat, rice, corn or any other type of grain; extracting the sugars into the brew (wort), adding other nice things like hops, spices or fruit and then introducing yeast cells to convert the sugars to alcohol in the fermentation process. There are many ways to approach this from simple liquid extract kits to full blown "all grain" mashing and brewing through multiple stages. Also, there are tons of beer styles to confuse your choices even more.

I started brewing in the mid-eighties for a few years and went the bottling route then. I had about six or so cases of long neck bottles and cases that I used at the time but Bill is correct in saying that bottling is a PITA. I now use 5 gal. kegs and will bottle a few from the finished kegs if I want to give a few away. Kegging systems are real simple these days too.

Start looking into the home brew forums and pick up a couple good books. Here are two books I recommend to get started.

The Bible - One of the earliest and best brewing companions. I have a dog eared copy from 1986.
The Complete Joy of Home Brewing

The new bible which I own and it is also very good.
How to Brew

Hope this helps - Happy Brewing

And what most novice brewers learn: The wort is really, really messy when it boils over on to the stove.laughing6

That was too funny! So many lessons for home brewers in that clip!! The exploding bottles can be a reality for some! Others have reported having their fermentor buckets blowing the lid and spewing beer & yeast cake on the ceiling!!

Thanks for the chuckle Tommy!

A friend of mine took a class to make his own beer some years back. Some of it was pretty tasty, and all of it produced remarkable flatulence.
