HorribleHerb 93 Digital Dash readout going insane!

Cruising along with the cruise control on and used the resume switch to accelerate to 74 mph. I felt the car accelerate but when I looked down the digital read out still showed 70.

I thought that was odd so I started pushing the gauge button and nothing changed! So I pushed the fuel button and nothing changed.

After about a minute I noticed what ever the last thing I pushed with the fuel button was now showing up and the speedo now showed 74mph.

I had to hit the brake to slow a little for traffic and the digital read out when crazy! Just started flashing all over and you could not read anything it was going so fast. Then I woke up! Just kidding!

Finally it went back to normal. When I got off the interstate and stopped at the bottom of the ramp I looked down and it showed 71 MPH!
When I started to move it dropped to 35 mph!

It did this a couple more times without any effect on the engine.

Is this some kind of computer box that is a pain to get at? groan!
Maybe a ground?

Thanks again for any ideas.

SES light on ?

Just the speedo flashing? And does the cruise still work normally? Thsn it may be the connection to the Central Control Module.
If the cruise has quit, it may be the Vechile Speed Sensor.

I'm not sure what an SES light is but there are no warning lights on.
Cruise works as it should! Thanks!

SES- Service Engine Soon light on the Information Display above the radio.

Do you have a FSM (Factory Servive Manusl)?
You really can't work on electrical on these cars without one.

Need history on car. You've owned it 15 years, drive it regularly, and the problem just cropped up? Or you just bought it and have no idea how long it's been doing it? Or ???

First thought through my mind when I see a new member from LA with electrical problems is "Katrina."

A quick glance at your other threads shows you have additional electrical issues.

At the least you need to collect all these problems in one place so people can see the big picture.

And you need an FSM.

On the specific problem - cruise control still works fine? That indicates it's not a VSS problem and probably not a PCM problem. First thing I'd look at is cluster connectors, and then wiring between cluster and PCM.

Owned the 93 since 95.
Had problems with ignition on & off within last year.

All ignition components back to stock. Runs great!

During ignition problems,(actually didn't know what the problem was at the time) the dash went crazy a couple times very briefly.

This is the first time since ignition change, I drove it for a couple hours.

The 93 was not in any flood or high water during Katrina or any other time.
Thanks
Herb

The harness connector to the back of the IP... If that is not snug, or, corroded, or, the tracer material isn't fitted right, all sorts of strange things can happen.
