Just reading the track rules for AMP. They call for a fire extinguisher in the car. Anyone have advise for what kind, size and how to mount? I won't be dooing that many track days, so hoping for some way to do a temporary mount.

It depends on weither you just want to meet the AMP thing or have something that gives you a chance to put a fire out.
Though fires in HPDE are extremely rare. If you just want to pass AMP, get something at HomeD. If you want some protection, get a 2 lb. if it will fit. Most are mounted in front of the pass seat and you can still get an instructor in the seat. If I was going to mount one, I'd put a 1 x 1/8th flat plate mounted to the 2 front seat frame studs. I'd drill 2 holes in that with nuts welded in or nutserts, that part would stay in the car. Then make an L bracket to mount the extinguisher brachet to. That way you only have 2 bolts to attach the thing for a track day. What SCCA recommends for stock classes: B. Hand-Held Fire Extinguisher Requirements The following are acceptable for Showroom Stock, Touring, Spec Miata, Super Touring and Improved Touring cars: 1. Halon 1301 or 1211, two (2) pound minimum capacity by weight. 2. Dry chemical, two (2) pound minimum with a positive indicator showing charge. Chemical: 10 BC Underwriters Laboratory rating, potassium bicarbonate (Purple K) recommended, 1A10BC Underwriters Laboratory rating multipurpose, ammonium phosphate and barium sulfate or Monnex. 3. The fire extinguisher shall be securely mounted in the cockpit. All mounting brackets shall be metal and of the quick release type. But there is no recuirement for SCCA HPDE's. If you want a good system that doesn't cover everything with powder- 1. Halon 1302 2. Halguard 3. Also Dupont FE3 but that may be only for incar systems. Double check the demensions before buying. A 1.4 lb Halguard runs about $120, (popular with hotrodders). |

Bill's suggestion is popular for C3s as well. I've got a 2.5lb Halon 1211, fits fine in front of the pass. seat, though I know the C4 foot wells are a bit tighter.

Well, I like on board fire systems much better but, a quick note on handheld extinguishers from our (SCCA) fire school.
Hopefully, you'll never have to try and put out an engine fire but the first thing inexperienced guys do is throw the hood up. This isn't a good idea, the engine fire is consuming (and deleting)oxygen under the hood. If you throw the hood up, you're ususlly going to see a big flare up. Pop the hood up and inch and give the compartment a good squirt with the extinguisher. Then open the hood and continue. |

I like that set up. If you don't mind what did it cost and what are the dimensions? Bill, if mine catches fire it will burn. I am not into fighting an engine bay fire. On another not I contacted AMP today and it turns out street cars (mine) are not required to have an extinguisher on board. |

They also have a red one and a black one for less coin, but I liked the chrome. Measures in at 3" diameter and about 15" total length: |

Understood. It's different racing, you have nomex underwear and a 3 layer nomex suit on. Plus, with an onboard system you just pull the knob on your way out. The onboards are really the way to go, 2 nozzles in the engine bay and one nozzle under the steering column pointing at the driver. I thought it was strange that AMP would require extinguishers in street cars but it's highly advisable. The thing with running HPDE's with anyone but SCCA and NASA is the quality of the corner workers especially in a fire situation, most aren't trained, ours are. |

That's good advice, not sure I would have thought about it in a panic situation. Let's just hope I am never on fire again... |
