Anyone know of a good used heater control cable or source of nos parts? If not, here's my predicament.
As some of you know, I'm working on my'86. I've got the dash pad off, and I have the heater control cable out ( manual control). The cable is not rusted as I'd imagined, but it doesn't slide smoothly as it should. I lubed it with lithium grease and it got a little better, but soon began to stiffen back up, indicating the lube was going away. I'm thinking the cable has some hidden kinks/damage that is keeping the cable in some sort of bind. |

You may want to soak or drench the cable in oil.
As for source? hm.... Mid America? GM? |

This is going to sound like a back-yard hack job but it does work in a pinch. I've used a carb choke cable for a control cable. It's been a few years but IIRC I got the cable from Pep Boys Auto parts. I had to cut some of the sheath and shorten it some, but it did work.

Do you have it disconnected from the heater control valve in the engine bay when you are trying to slide it?

Thanks for all the replies and help guys.
Matt, yes, it was removed from the car while I was working with it. Gris, I thought about using kroil, but it's been my experience that it'll dry and turn to a shellack after time. Joel has the same idea I ended up using. (Great minds think alike) I measured the cable thikcness @ .054". Then I went to see Manny, Moe, and Jack and looked thru their "HELP" section for choke cables. I got one that measured .047" and, in a leap of faith, cut the end off the OEM part. When I pulled it out, it was in fact kinked. I slid the new one in and then duplicated the ends of the OEM part on the new one at the appropriate length. I works! And works well. The unit is re-attatched and is adjusted, and seems to work quite smoothly. Thanks again for the help guys! |
