Thought some of you might find this interesting, especially the clutch & flywheel.

2 of us had the wrenches flying and pulled the engine in 5 hours, kinda complicated to my Formula Ford where the engine pull took 45 minutes.

The skinny wheels are trailer wheels that jack up the front end so we can put the car in the trailer, with the slicks, the bellypan is only 25mm off theground.

The rear wishblones and half shafts.

The transaxle, the engine and transaxle are the rear "frame" of the car, only 2 tubes from the roll bar are attached to the rear of the engine, there is no frame behind the driver's seat at all.

Engine's out and ready to ship to Portland.

The clutch: multi disc, carbon fiber. The diameter is 6 1/2 inches.

The flywheel weighs about a pound and a half. It makes the car very easy to stall in 1st gear.
But it revs like crazy , the redline is 10,300.

A scheduled re-build or did something break?
I couldn't even guess the cost of that clutch assembly, too rich for my blood!

Well, sorta scheduled, the driver ran the car a few times last year just to get used to it, it's new to him.
These are high maintenance motors, basically 2 test days and a season (10-12 races) and do a rebuild.

Luckily, the pro builder keeps all the build sheets and discuss motors with you that he built 15 years ago.

Now, we can start with a clean sheet and know where we are.

A good guess on the clutch would be 5 grand.

Putting it back together will take way more time and we have a bunch of other stuff to do to the car like adding GPS to the data acquisition system and installing 2 way radios.

Since it was the first time teardown, pictures had to be taken, bolts had to go in labeled baggies and the mid-teardown beer break took up some time.

helluva project, Bill!

I assume the motor is a Toyota of some sort?

Actually, it's just yearly maintainence for a Formula Atlantic, Andy.

Yea, a Toyota TRG 4 cyl. twincam. This one's fuel injected. The last one I worked on (in my avatar) had 3 Webers.

These motors really need a going over after a season.
The 10,300 rpm redline is one of the reasons.
The rebuild will run about $8,500.

Also have to magniflux all the trans gear sets (25 sets counting the spares). Can't afford to have the trans blow a gear like last year, one gear set (like first or second, etc) has 2 gears and costs $550.

The high power and high downforce tends to either wearout of break things. The tread on the rear slicks is 16 inches and loads the crap out of things. Very expensive car to run.

Build a new belly pan since it tends to hit the track.

And we have some carbon fiber repairs that need done.
