I stepped out to the back yard and much to my surprise I can hear the whine of Indy Racing League engines at the track. 9:20PM and they're out going strong. Here is the track link.

Have you taken the chance to see them race there? I saw the IRL cars run at Charlotte in the late 90s and they were not only very competitive but wickedly fast. I've also seen Indy cars in the pre-IRL days at Michigan, Mid-Ohio and best of all, at Indianapolis in '68-'69 and '70. I gotta get back there one of these days. I love the Indianapolis 500 and no matter what is going on in racing politics, it will always remain the greatest race in the world, IMO.
Although I'm sure many will disagree, I'm thrilled that the IRL came out on top in the open-wheel wars. Their style of racing is much more competitive, more American and the type of champ car racing that I grew up with in the 60s and 70s. Road courses are fine but these cars should run on plenty of ovals too. It's better racing, more exciting and a much better view for the fans. And it's what top level, American-style open wheel racing has always been about and should remain. Now, if we could just bring back the Watson roadsters! |

I've gone to many races at Homestead of all venues. I've seen some horrendous wrecks and lives lost there too. The IRL cars are wicked fast. 210 plus on the oval. Nascar is more entertaining there though because of the number of cars/trucks on the track. 20 cars on a mile and a half just doesn't leave much wheel to wheel racing. Usually the fastest few cars are battling for the lead and the rest are just running laps. Nascar rides can hit the wall and continue to race. There is no continuing if you take an IRL racer into the wall. Man they just disintergrate leaving the cockpit intact. Most of the times the drivers are intact too. I went to all the events for over 10 years. Now I pretty much fire up the grill in the yard and watch it on the tube. I'm getting to be a real lazy mofo. Lots of former Cart/IRL drivers have taken a seat with the big dogs. I like the road course for IRL better than the roundy round. True , you can't see as much, but there are more shifts and lots of speed variations. Tampa /St Pete follows this one.

Dixon wins . Kanaan gets tied up in wreck with about 7 to go. He clearly had the best running car at that stage of the race. Danika finished.
