1996 CE 6MT. Went on a long drive in yesterday afternoon's heat and after a particularly hard stop the brake pedal went real soft, and then after a few minutes cruising it went back to normal, and then after a few minutes soft again. "Brake Pressure" light came on. Can still stop the car "normally" but extra effort needed and pedal was almost to the floor. ASR lights have been on since I got the car, so I don't think they are related, but could be a contributor.

Brake fluid reservoir is full but looks black and I think it's 10+ years old.

Possible I boiled the fluid off.. plan to completely flush it and do the ABS flush (I have access to a scan tool to cycle it).

Any other suggestions/theories?

You can try a flush first to see if that saves it. But it's very possible that the internal seals in the master cylinder went bad and are allowing the fluid to push by. In that case you need a new MC.

I gotta agree with Mat on this one.
You can try the fluid swap, but the brake master cylinder is 24 years old.

As an extra thought, if you do change out the master cylinder, get and install a “brake bias spring.” I was very impressed with the one I had in my 88. I got that one from “Doug Rippie Motorsports,” but you can get them from Eckler, I think, and some of the other larger Corvette suppliers.

Thanks guys. Pedal was back to normal a few hours later.

Will be doing a full bleed thru tomorrow, and then a full flush with some DOT4 (this will be a track car) and new rotors/pads/steel lines in a couple weeks. I'll add a new master to the list.

Flushed the whole system today - pulled about 2 quarts through.. all brakes had very dark fluid. Couldn’t see a bleed screw on the ABS but I used a vacuum pump to pull the fluid through the callipers and apparently that is good enough. Cycled the ABS a few times on a handy patch of dirt - brakes feel great now. DOT4 and a new master and new stainless lines on order.

You did it right... the ABS is a parallel thing... Some ABS systems have their own dedicated fluid, I would need to confirm that.

I agree with the replacement parts list... 100%... age is a major factor now. And this car should have the GS front calipers! Great bonus!
