what special needs done to replace the bose system in my 91?

i have sourced a 2 din oldsmobile cd/cass head unit with wiring plug from an 01. i know i need to replace the speakers, they all blew up one by one anyway, but will the other GM radio plug in or do i need to rewire and run new speaker wires?

Wiring harness should be different. As long as you're in there, it can't hurt to run new/better speaker wire - I would personally.

As far as the radio fitting, you'll more than likely have to do some trimming of the dash, because it isn't a full 2 din.

This is the interesting thing with DIN standards... there isn't one for depth. Ignorant, ain't it?

I would be shocked if the Olds head looks right. Is the Olds head bose? If so, that opens up another kettle of fish...

oh, and the wiring will be seriously different. the C4 bose, even tho it uses many of the same wire colours, is very unique.

Also, I moved this to Audio. It will help more folks this way.

thanks for the move. i'll be hitting the post office tomorrow hoping the new head unit is there. i'm hoping it is something that can work, because i am going insane without radio and find myself taking the grand prix just so i have something to listen to(besides the turbo spooling in that car sounds cool too).

the olds unit is not a bose, just a base model CD/cassette unit. my biggest thing is wanting to keep GM parts in it, because i've never seen a 90-96 dash look right to me with an aftermarket head unit.

here is the picture of it:

so. this thing is the same size as the corvette unit but the mounting is different and integrated to the head unit as opposed to the typical any 1.5 din GM unit fits any gm car so long as you swap the brackets that i am used to.

my dash is apart

how much has to come out? the plug in the bose head unit is not the same as the adapter plug that i have, so are the other wires down in the dash/console somewhere at another part of the system?

oh, yea... lotsa crap to deal with.

the bose system on the C4 is very unique. It has a tuner module that sits under the dash. You will need to tap in there, more than likely.

today i put a pair of 6.5" pioneers in the back and made a long adapter harness to stick my spare sony head unit in the car. the car has tunes for the first time in 5 years, even if the head unit is just sitting there and i dont have front speakers yet. tomorrow i'll pick up the late c4 specific dash adapter and properly mount the head unit and maybe run RCA's and an amp lead back to the little compartment behind the passenger seat so i can pop my amp and sub in there.

not looking forward to running those or a power lead.

Too bad it's a 91 - I've got a couple extra dash adapters from my 89. I see you decided not to go with the olds head unit - too many wiring woes?

i still may go with it, depending what i can do about the bracket situation. the brackets on the olds head unit are part of the steel case of the head unit itself so not easily reconfigured. if i buy the adapter kit and it contains brackets that could be epoxied onto the olds head unit after the others are removed i would definitely be up for the challenge.

Can you say "Alpine?"

This is becoming a huge hassle, for something that simply won't sound that good.

"won't sound that good" is all relative.

compared to the car having no tunes at all for the last 6 years...

i gave in and went with the sony unit. it has outs should i decide to add a sub, has ins should i decide to add anything else, plays wma and mp3, and best of all i had it. not terribly impressed with the METRA install kit - it really is a POS - but i got it to work and look right. with all the holes on their brackets you'd think one on each side would match up with one on the head unit, and their screws to hold the little cubby hole sucked and didnt work.
