My 89 has been sitting since December 2005 due to a blown head gasket. I've spent the time since then planning, saving money, and collecting parts for a 383 build. Finally, after all this time, I dropped my engine block and stroker kit off at the machine shop this morning for short block assembly.

Short block build specs are as follows:

Callies Dragonslayer Crank
Manley H-lite H-beam rods (6" long)
Mahle flat top coated pistons (-5 cc reliefs)
Bret Bauer cam (CompCams lobes) 230/242; .603/.586 w/ 1.6 rockers; 111.5 LSA
Cloyes Street Roller timing set
4 bolt truck block; 0.005 piston to deck, .044 total quench
10.8 SCR with 65 cc heads

Top end parts include AFR195 Eliminators that I am porting and a ported FIRST intake. I will have the heads (and perhaps the intake) flowed when the porting is complete.

I haven't totally decided on the headers yet (4 into 1 vs tri-Y), but the exhaust will be full dual 2 1/2" minimum with an x-pipe and cats.

I've run the combo through Engine Analyzer v. 3.3. Using the most conservative assumptions the program offers for dyno type and test speed, I'm getting 495HP @ 6000 and 510TQ @ 4000.

If all goes according to the current plan, I should be ready to fire it up by labor day.

Although if that engine analyzer is anything like desktop dyno, I would take the results with a grain of salt.

I want to stroke mine, but I'm thinking more on the lines of ported TPI and vortec heads. I have to pass smog, which limits what I can do.

Have you considered flowing the parts before porting too?

Sounds great - that's a long time to wait! Now *we* have to wait for pictures. Keep us posted.

Engine Analyzer is FAR more accurate than Desktop Dyno. I have both, and I was able to match the dyno data for original 350 combo within a couple of HP and lb-ft on EA with the proper curve shape. I could never get DD to give me the right curve shape. I double checked the EA data by putting it into Drag2000 and the predicted ET/MPH were nearly a perfect match to my best timeslip.

I tried to set the sim as conservatively as I could. I feel the combo should dyno above 400 RWHP/TQ if I get it built right.....

I'll post updates as things come together. :thumbright:

your best bet would be a ZZ383 short block with nice aluminum heads. A big ass cat and you will pass smog.

The desk top HP estimates should be more accurate because it has all been done before. My sim puts my engine at 480 and a near identical build in a hot rod magazine dynoed at 420. I figure 420.
