I recently found out something very useful. In Penna. if your car is 25yrs old you can get an antique plate. If you register it as an antique you pay a one time registration fee of I believe $85 and never have to get a state inspection or emissions test. If the car is 20yrs old you can get it registered as a classic car and get the same one time registration fee. You still have to do yearly inspections but do not have to get an emissions test.

Are there any restrictions on driving it?

In IL, you can get antique plates but you can only drive your car to and from car shows and in parades. Kinda ghey.

It's puzzling that the Pa. legislature would do anything that decreases even a small amount of their tax base.
The Pa. state inspections are a major ripoff, I know, I did them for many years.

That being said, Pa's a good place and the classic/antique plates have been available for a long time.

I too thought there were some driving restrictions on them, but could be wrong.

I have classic plates on mine. They are tough to get though if your car is anything but restored to stock. If you have engine mods but look stock on the outside just don't take any pics of the engine when you apply for them. That's what I did and it worked. Helps to take the nitrous bottle out for the interior pics too! If you do have mods that are seen in the photos, on the application put down that it is a work-in-progress to restore back to stock and that you can't afford to do it all at once. That might get the approval as well.

If I remember correctly, the car cannot be used for normal commuting. Can be used once a week for normal commuting/driving, and can be driven to shows and events and such as much as desired. No mileage restriction but the general unwritten "rule" is 5,000 miles per year.

I live in Centre county so I do have the emissions testing on my other vehicles. Any vehicle I use for a daily driver I'm not interested in working around the system, I'd rather keep it legal and keep the air clean.

There are still quite a few counties that do not have emissions testing. Another work-around (for the time being) is to have your vehicle registered to an address in a county that has no emissions testing (Huntingdon, for example). If you have any friends or relatives that live in that county, just register it with their physical and mailing address. If not, you may need to get a Post Office box in that county to do so and you will still likely need a physical address. Not desirable to have to do this, but if you have a modded 'vette that you don't street drive a whole lot, not alot of choices. I used to go to Midas for inspections, and they won't even approve aftermarket cats. The entire stock emissions systems need to be intact for visual, since they only do visuals and gas cap testing. Sucks, because you might have aftermarket cats and a setup that actually pollutes less than the stock setup but it is still illegal, whereas the stock system is legal.


PS: Nothing says sleeper like a bone stock appearing C4 with classic plates on the back!
