First let me clarify "long crank", it takes my 89 about 5-6 revolutions of cranking before it starts.

Now lets assume that everything that affects the engine starting is good: fuel pump, fuel pressure, injectors, plugs, etc. I have read several times in different places the 89 (possibly other models) have a designed delayed start. IIRC it was an injector pulse delay until the engine turned over a specified number of times. Is this true or just another myth?

Mine has always done this. It spins fast and always starts, but that little extra cranking has been a thorn in my azz. The other cars I have ALL crank the instant the switch is turned to "start".

Thanks
Joel

I know our Jeep has a long crank... the ECM is rather crude and has to redetermine #1.

That is a common known problem with the tuning community using the ARAP chip (89Vette) as a base for their tuning.
Can be changed easily though with a few changes to the tune.
Mechanically you won't be able to do much, no myth!

I can assure you, the '165 has no idea when it is ever at #1, or any other cyl for that matter

Agreed.

Tinker with crank fuel multiplier, or retard timing during crank.

I used ARAP for about 2 months, back. Oh about 10 years ago. I like the '730 MAP stuff better, although with a huge cam things could get hairy.

Our Jeep is a 93... I think the ECM is called "REMIX" or something to that effect. I don't remember. I will have to surf the Jeep forum to find out.

OK, that was about what I thought! I'll just start looking around for someone to possibly tweak my chip. Or I'll just get over it and move on to other things.
But that car sure does fire up good with a small shot of starting fluid into the vacuum line!
Still curious on why it even has this delay.
I can understand the reason with a "distributorless" ignition system, being the crank sensor and cam sensor needing to talk to each other.

Thanks
Joel

Well, a picture says more....., here a visual aid to understand it.
The injectors simply don't fire up from 1-8

Thanks Woodstock! I'm not real "tuner" savy so I don't really know what that info tells me. Is the bottom line showing revolutions before injectors pulse?
I need to do some reading to be able to understand it more.

Thanks
Joel

I don't know why GM tuned it this way, but the further you move the #9 value to the left the sooner the engine will fire up.

Thanks for the info! Once I get my chip or start tuning I'll get that changed. My 89 takes forever to fire up and that's with new injectors, filter, regulator. I've read about guys who said they bought their 89s new and it's done it since day one. Guess this explains why. Wonder what GMs thought process was for it?

Hi Joel,
it's probably easiest to post the pics here. These are the steps to upgrade the memcal with a new chip/eprom.
Note: without a socket you'll get all sorts of trouble codes.

...and below the alternative from Moates.net or Hypertech

stock memcal / eprom removed / eprom sockets / socket soldered in place
