I'm putting the engine back together on my 85 and found it interesting that there wasn't a timing tab on the engine. Aside from that, when I have the engine at top dead center on the compression stroke. the mark on the balancer is not at the 0 mark on the tab (2 o'clock), it's at 10 o'clock. Is this right? Also was the timing tab left off or didn't it come with one?

Sounds like most likely the Harmonic Balancer's outer ring has slipped on the hub.

Most SBC's TDC mark are at 2 o'clock althou some are straight up at 12 o'clock, so you have to be careful that you have the correct timming cover/tab/harmonic balancer combination.

I changed the timing cover when I changed the cam and added an aftermarket timing tab. I was thinking that the balancer had slipped since the timing mark was so far out but when I looked at the elastomer it didn't look like it had slipped. So pretty much the timing mark will line up with the keyway on the crank right?

Older ones were more in the 12 oclock position, then they moved to like 2 oclock. Best to get a new balancer and timing tab.
