Happy to have the overnight coverage, but now I remember why they didn't have it last year...

The more I see McNish drive the more I like him.

Isn't there some soccer match on this weekend, too?

;)

Soccer is over for today. The late game was at 11:30AM PDT.

England v. US tied @ 1.

We met McNish at Sebring a couple years ago. He is one helluva nice guy.

Yea, San Francisco in my region of record, I've been on the corners with some of these guys.

And the SCCA Reno Region RE (Regional Exec.) and his wife have their FIA credentials, headed to Spain this month, I think to work the F1 race.

#63 Corvette, Johnny O, Jan and Antonio, is out!

Engine failure. Doug Fehan indicated the crankcase sensor showed a major engine failure.

Just prior to that, the lead Peugeot blew up in a big way.

Audi leads P1, Corvette #64 still leads GT2.

#64 Corvette was wrecked by an overzealous Anthony Davidson in a Peugeot.

The rear was pretty bashed in, but they are work on it. The damage is in the rear section. The body work is toast, the rear wing, which houses the oil cooler, has been crushed. The real problem is the hole in the dry sump oil tank.

They did well and got the #64 out again.

Then a few laps later it retired with engine failure!

All bad luck this year!

Well, that sucks. But that's racin'.

All the Peugeots are out, so......

Being overzealous when you're running at the front isn't real smart, IMO.
I got knocked off the track in a 25 hour race by the leader one time, he had a full lap on second place at the time. Put his win in jeopardy by doing so.

The engine failures seem unusual for Team Corvette.

Hope they kick ass next year.

Arent the GT2 engines identical engines with the exception of a shorter stroke? I wonder if they are revving them higher than the 7.0 litre engine and this is beyond the capability, especially on continuous runs like Mulsanne.

2010:
Where the C6.R and ZR1 differ significantly are in situations where GT rules actually prohibit the use of the more sophisticated ZR1 components. For example, the ZR1 is equipped with carbon-composite brake rotors, while GT regulations require ferrous (steel) brake discs. And, where the ZR1 utilizes a 6.2-liter supercharged\ V-8, the C6.R uses a naturally aspirated, production-based 5.5-liter small-block V-8.

The Corvette C6.Rs' engines are developed, built and maintained by GM. Designated LS5.5R, the naturally aspirated powerplant is based on the Corvette Z06's 7.0-liter LS7 engine (which in turn was developed with the 7.0-liter race engine used in the C6.R GT1 cars), and is built with a production cast-aluminum cylinder block.

Pending GT2 class regulations specify a maximum displacement of 5.5 liters. The reduction in displacement to meet this requirement was achieved by shortening the crankshaft stroke and reducing the cylinder bore diameter. In accordance with the regulations, the race engines have two 28.8mm diameter intake air restrictors. The LS5.5R engines are equipped with dry-sump oiling systems, CNC-ported aluminum cylinder heads with titanium intake and exhaust valves, and sequential electronic port fuel injection. The race engines use E85R ethanol racing fuel in the ALMS and E10 fuel in Le Mans.

There is enough difference between the GT1 and GT2 engines that I am not surprised they had teething problems.

The wreck with Davidson damaged the oil tank. They had to replace it. The feeling was that enough oil existed in the lines to keep the engine healthy considering the short, low speed, distance travelled. Apparently not.

GM will have some teething issues.

Better for GM in the long term since the lessons learned will be passed on.
