Just wondering if anyone has done this. I know it will probably be overkill but I already have the subs

I have 6x9s. I seem to recall 8s are the biggest you can fit back there in the stock speaker enclosure. Because of this, more people that want a concealed 10" put it in the passenger side storage compartment firing straight up (fiberglassed custom box).

I don't recall off hand what year you vette is. There are differences in the interior 84-89 and 90+. If a 90+, consider some kick pods or mounting the subs in the front of the car, that's what I would do.

I have dual 10s in my storage bins and they BUMP. but in 85 they are both empty so didnt have to move anything like later models.

I was thinking of building a mount that I could bolt in the rear mounting place. I always keep the courtesy shade pulled shut unless the targa is in there.

You can make it happen. More accurately, you can make anything happen.



As you look at the speaker enclosures, view them as the base... the complex part comes next and that is to build the baffle up and out from the deck to support the 10" and still allow the top to fit. I don't envy you that task.

This would require a lot of cutting, fitting, testing, fibreglassing, bondoing... oh, and don't forget finishing with carpet.

It can be done...

Another option is a speaker box that spans the rear deck and joins the enclosures. I would have to measure, but they may or may not need the existing enclosures for air.

As for 8" subs that fit, there are only a couple... use the JL Audio 8W3 as a baseline.

I thought about building an enclosure that fits into the curve of the cargo area. I like my storage bins.

I built an enclosure inside the left side cargo bin. So I still have full use of the right side one. No ABS or stereo module in there in 85.

The sub doesn't thump like I was hoping for, but it could just be the shitty music I listen to. Michael Bolton doesn't play drums loud enough.

Do you drive with the lid open like that? Just curious since otherwise I don't see how the sound could get into the cabin.

bass is uni-directional. It will pound through the lid, muffled tho.

The fiberglass bin is thin, so I built a 3/4" mdf enclosure that fits inside it. It's a freaking bizarre shape to get the most of the volume in there, but it's still only about 1/2 cu ft.

I think the Boston G2's that I have require 1 cu ft.
