hi, i have a 77 corvette and having some issues with my rear end. I had the diff rebuilt, rear trailing arms rebuilt, wheelbearings rebuilt with tolerances. new shocks, new universals. The issue i am having is when moving slowly and turning the wheel i have a banging noise in the rear end. not just a noise but its like the whole car gets bumped a bit, like its shunted sideways. Now i live in Australia so no mechanics have ever seen this stuff and have no idea, so i am pretty much forced to do it myself with some friends mechanic shop. any thoughts?

When you put in the new fluid did you add friction modifier?

Yea, that could be it especially if everything's good above a slow speed.

That would be the place to start. Mine did the same thing when we first got it back on the road. New fluid and a couple of bottles of Posi Additive smoothed it right out.

Welcome!

Friction modifier would help a LOT!

Hm... Where in Oz are you? There are some pretty good Corvette shops in the Brisbane area.

I would also take a second look at the U-joints and the angles of the half shaft in relation to the horizon line.

What you're describing can also be the kick from a U-joint that is binding.

Even one needle can cause a whole world of hurt.

hi guys,

yes i have added the GM lube to the diff, thanks for the replies. I will check out the half shafts as this might be the only thing i have not checked.

Yes i am in brisbane and am yet to find a good corvette shops, found a few that think they are good, but once you dig below the surface you get the blank deer headlight stare that i love so much.

Frad - Is your Vette a 1977? When turning the wheel, are you saying when the wheel is rotating, or when turning the steering wheel, and the differential is actually being asked to work?

One favour, no spamming, please.

Yea, really.

However, if the car is lurching sideways, check for missing trailing arm alignment shims.
