i lost my one and only key to my car the other day.. went to the dealer but my vin didn't show a vats code. i tried getting to the build sheet but its a goner. its parked at a friends house and i need to get it into my storage unit so i can get the hell out of here. anyone know where i can get this info? the dealer called some hotline and they had to send it to level two which takes 24 hours. and i found out that defeating it in the pcm isn't enough.

Call a locksmith who has a key code reader. They can plug it in the ignition switch & read the pellet code & cut you new keys.

can't defeat it in the PCM, as far as I know.

These are fancy and an ohm meter won't do, IIRC. According to the helm manual, you need access to tool J35628, PASS-Key interrogator.

The VATS is simply a resistor in the key which completes a circuit to the PCM.
On me C5, I had the key, but my lock cylinder was going bad where the contacts inside mate to the key's resistor contacts.
I simply measured the resistance in the key, then found a like resistor and jumped it into the pigtail that plugs into the lock cylinder.

I don't know how to determine a resistor value without the existing key. If you can somehow get that resistor value, you should be able to override the VATS. But then you still have to come up with a cut key...

i got the code to cut the key. so they gave me a key but it was the wrong chip. but i turned off the vats in the pcm and turned the key on and jumped the starter with a nickel and it started.. so once i put all my shit in my storage unit i am going put it in there and forget about it for quite a while.

Just don't lose the key to the storage unit.
