One likely scenario is the ODO has been tampered with & has come loose from the mount and no longer engages the motor, an easy fix. The Battee info is way out of date.

Interesting. But at what quality level/standards? Sometimes companies sell one to gm and a lower level to the public branded under their own name.

Matthew

EXACT same part, whatever you order make SURE it is ethanol compliant.

So I was commenting on how well the car was running last week. But the past few days I've driven it I noticed it was running rich...moreso than usual. And it was starting hard when hot. It's always suffered from that a little bit. And my FP numbers after shut down have usually dropped a little bit, but nothing to be alarmed about. Seemed intermittent, though. I have a new walbro pump last year, rebuilt injectors, new fuel pressure regulator diaphragm about 3 years ago, etc.

Anywho, after I drove it to the restaurant and post office today, it was an exceptionally long crank time to get it restarted...and reeked of a rich condition, like an old carb that was flooded.

So I pulled in the garage and left it running. Pulled off the FP regulator vacuum hose from the plenum...what to I get? Fuel dumping out on my finger. Damn it. Good in the sense that I know what the problem is. Should help with my mpg, too. Bad in the sense that now I need to order the part and pull the fricken plenum off to replace it. Ugh.

For future reference I was digging around -

Part numbers/cost are as follows:

AC Delco 2142156 / GM 19187371 - I've seen this from $69 to 180!
Standard Motor Products PR10 - From $45-$55 depending on site
TPIS has is on their website (part #15?) for $39.95

I'm not sure what I'm gonna order yet. I like AC Delco parts but that's a hard one to swallow. I might go with the TPIS version.

So...like I said, if it's not one thing, it's another....

Matthew

FYI Standard is the vendor/supplier to GM/AC Delco for this part.

Reving the motor without being under load will not detect a problem. If the alternator is bolted to the engine, then it's grounded. You are correct in saying either a weak battery or a faultey alternator will cause all kind of problems on a computer operated car. The alternator needs to put out 13.8-14.0 volts.

I've gone through the whole distributor within the last year and 500-1000 miles while I was chasing down issues. The cap/rotor/rotor button are probably 4 years old, those are the oldest part on the dizzy. Those don't show signs of arcing or wear.

New(er):

wires What kind?
plugs
ignition control module
pick up coil
capacitor harness
ignition coil Again, brand name?
drive gear
also, shimmed/cleaned/rebuilt

There is a noticeable miss above say 53-5400 rpms. I have to datalog it, but when I play on the street a little with some WOT bursts I can feel it.

I value both of your opinions highly.

Suggestions?

Matthew

The reason I ask is a lot of aftermarket parts do not meet OE specs. Standard & Delphi do. AC Delco may be "iffy"
Most MSD components, for example, are now being made in China-for the lowest cost. Hi RPM miss is usually an ignition issue with plugs, coil & wires the usual suspects in order. If you've had an arcing wire-then it's done for.
Carbon tracs are now developed and they don't go away.

The driver board is not a service part anymore, but it can be repaired-but it is not a DIY project. There are 14 critical IC's on the board that contol different functions of the display board. It is the top board in the cluster and controls all display functions and cruise control, if you have CC.

Andy,
You are correct. The odo is powered by an electric motor. Since both components are not working & the OP is sure that the VSS is operational, then it is likely there is a bad IC on the driver board.

NEVER use a used fuel pump and sender. We sell new OEM senders complete with pump for less than the price of a sender without a pump.

Andy, apparently have not heard a system in complete working order. A 15-20 year system will not sound like one with all new parts. A good BOSE system can do eveything but play "boom box" music.

Use a good flashlight & look in the tank for trash. If found, clean the tank, install new sender & PUMP and change the fuel filter.

Andy, 144 amps is WAY too much for a stock system. You'll do more damage than the money you think you're saving. We sell new REMY alternators for way less than you'd pay for junk @ your local FLAPS. The key to making an alternator last is a trickle charger and a good battery. A weak $60 battery will cook a $200 alternator very quickly.
Ken.

Call a locksmith who has a key code reader. They can plug it in the ignition switch & read the pellet code & cut you new keys.

We repair all CDM's for $175. Buying a used one is a crapshoot. Ours carry a TWO year warranty. We are the SE distributor for BOSE and sell amps that NEVER fail.

We can repair it and make "board level" repairs, if they haven't damaged it. We are the ONLY company that has access to GM test equipment to perform the 40 tests needed by the 9278 ECM. We can also factory reprogram any GM computer, period.
