Yesterday afternoon temperatures hovering around the 102 degree mark.

I took the Corvette out and after driving to the place I was going to (about 15 miles or so) temperature was showing 231 on the electronic display. Also, speed limit was about 35mph for the last mile or so. When shutting off it made some weird, almost knocking sounds. Started up ok, not great sounded like knocking again right when I started. I did accidentally put in a load of regular fuel...(?)

I've also noticed that after driving it, it likes to turn over for a bit befoe it will catch. When cold, no issues. So for instance, once its been driven and/or even when I come out after work (8-9 hours), I'll have a bit of a time starting it...cranking is fine, but it might take a bit to fire...normal? It will turn over a couple of times though initially it wants to fire when the key is first turned over.

Should I be pushing the throttle down once when starting it?

The sound you are talking about is like a chug a chug phsss sound when you turn it off. Mine use to do this too when I had the factory Throttle body. It hasn't done that since putting on a new TB. 231 is getting warm but the fans are programmed to kick on at 228 I think, so that is at the top of its climb as I remember. It gets pretty hot down there in SC where you live and I remembers my car doing some weird things on really hot days.

I know... not too technical, but maybe Bill or one of the other Gurus can help better.

Sounds like a little bit of run on after turning off the ignition. That could be from the temp but is not generally normal.

The motor should fire immeadiately hot or cold. So, something's slightly out of wack, just slightly.

And generally no, fuel injected motor needs to have the throttle onened on startup, that's for carbed motors.

Everything was fine this morning, no issues. But I think, yes, there is something not quite right as that start issue is a symptom. I did have to crank it for a bit on Friday, so that's not right.

I'll see this afternoon what the temperatures do to the car when I drive home. Good to know about the fans.

The dieseling and the hard start, hot may be related.

It's just guessing to say what it may be, may be the IAC, MAF, ECM yada, yada.

You'll have to start by checking the codes and if there aren't any then, a data scan is the only thing to do.

You can check the fans by driving until fully warmed up then open the hood in your driveway and watch the temp gauge to see when the fans come on.

Will do on the fans!

OK, I think there are directions for downloading codes here somewhere...or do I just go to Autozone come to think of it?

The data scan...is that the Tech II that Andy was mentioning? If so, either dealer or well equiped shop, right?

I think you can check codes on a 94-96 on the dash, maybe someone here has the procedure.

Don, can tell you about scanning with your laptop.
You need a cable but can do 20 free scans with DataMaster. then have someone like Mick (Mseven) review it.

Yes, the Tech-II is a data scanner, among other things!!!

Heat related... I don't blame the outside air temp, unless the air is getting thin. But once it starts to warm outside, all it does is speed up the warm inside, so to speak.

It will effect how good a job the radiator and condenser can do to transfer heat. But in general, the underhood temps won't differ much from a 70F day and a 102F day.

Where it will effect things is with the intake air temp setting... The MAF? I wonder if it is up to snuff for this weather.

Fuel might be an issue... could be dealing with some vapour lock, but I doubt it.

Check for codes...

You can check the codes on the dash but I have never done that. I use TTS Datamaster and a USB cable. I think you still use the same cable as I do, but not sure.

There is a slight learning curve but once you get the hang of it, its not bad. You are just looking for codes.

However, if I were you... I'd not invest in all of this yet. You should do a search here on how to get the codes on the dash readout. I'll look in my FSM later because I'm sure yours is the same as mine. If you can pull the codes from the dash it will save you the cost of the cable and the learning curve on the software.

Thank you, thank you. I'm not getting any service lights on the dash, but I should still check for codes?

Definately. The SES lite doesn't always come on when you have a code.

Printing...where is the DLC to connect the paperclip to? On the Miata its under the hood. Mustang, its by the driver's side right knee in the console.

Stupid question, I know...

It is mounted on the hush panel above the accelerator pedal.

Are you using E10 fuel? That could contribute to the vapor lock. We have been using E85 in my wifes Tahoe but it was starting hard on real hot days so we went back to E10 and no problems. It would run ok after it started but it would crank for awhile and usually it just starts immidiatly.

Probably not it, but I was just wondering....

I think I am using the E10. Everything on the pumps down here indicates the stuff is fortified with ethanol. Can't get away from it. I think I've seen special E85 pumps but don't use those when I see them.

Same here, I've been running that for 5 years.

AND I run the 89 octane.

No E85 won't work in your car, it is for flex fuel cars only. My post was misleading.

You might try a load or two of 91 premium without any alcohol to see if that helps starting on hot days. Ethenol has a lot of vapor....even in E10. I run 91 in the Vettes. They had 93 octane for awhile but it went away. It was 91 cut with 10% ethenol.........The fuel may not have anything to do with your starting problems.

Might be worth a try to run the higher number gasoline. I still need to track down the codes so maybe this afternoon there will be time.

Not fimular with these types of gasoline. Are any of these what we have in California. When I was in Iowa they had some high alcohol fules. Locals joked it was just extra corn in the tank.

Fill me in please

Oh yea.
It might depend on your area but they're there.

Look on the pumps, it will say "contains ethenol".

But, you've been running it since you've been there, don't worry about it.

We run the same suff as Ca,. well at least Northern Ca.

The only thing I've been doing is draining the tank & carb on my snowblower and generator for the summer.

The last time I worried about gas formulation, and price was in the 70's. My daily comute to work from Bakersfield to Lake Isabella. There was a different formulation in Isabella. Octane level to match the elevation I think that is correct. But that worry soon faided as gas sky rockeded to 40 cents a gallon. How was I going to be able to make it on my pay of $888 a month. Ah the good old days.
