A friend dropped off a Linclon 110 wire feed welder today for me so I can finish up some frame braces Im making for the Camino and can get the body back on and finish this stupid thing. .

Few questions...first, its been 15+ yrs since Ive done this....so Ill practice on some scrap of course.

1- There is an suto darkening helmet included...Said the battery is out on it..How does this thing come apart and where can I get a new one.

2- About 6 feet from the chassis Im working on I have the body (freshly painted) sitting next to it with a car cover on.

Do I have to worry about any sparks hurting the paint (unless the cover catches fire!!)...

Its flux core wire fwiw...I know, gas is better but its free and Im short on both time and dough right now.

Any other suggestions? Will be working with both 1/8" and 1/4" thick pieces.

Been longer than that for me....lol. Did the flux core come with the machine? Seems like I had one of those in my shop, and I'm not quite sure (memory) if you can get the Lincoln 110 to run flux core, I seem to remember using bare wire with 75/25 gas. As far as the helmet goes..no idea, only the old typical helmet use.

Its a Lincold 110 from Home Depot. it came with the roll of flux core wire.

Do you think if I got some of those think grey tarps and hung them up that would be safe enough? Dont wanna catch anything on fire here. Wish I could do this outside the garage but that would get me kicked out of here ASAP. (condo complex).

They frown on "working on cars" or relate noise". I get along with everyone and work with the garage door shut just to keep the peace.

Just wait til the day I fire this beast up, they are going to crap their pants

Go to your nearest welding supply store and they should be able to point you in the right direction. I have used the self darkening hoods but there are many different kinds and without seeing it I couldn't tell you where the battery is.

It will shed sparks more than gas shielded welding, but it won't be throwing
fire more than 1 or 2 feet. The usual disclaimers apply. benny

Don't forget about the ones that hit the floor . A hanging tarp would probably be OK . Depending on how big the braces are you could easily make up a small booth to weld in . I'm thinking table top closed on 3 sides and top. That way you can gain some control over the sparks

There is no way I would weld that close to a fresh paint job. At the very least you should "layer" several sheets of tin foil over roof and the side of car. But I do agree with the earlier reply of hanging a tarp or some type of containment. Flying sparks can do a lot of damage, and they usually travel further than you want. Look for more splatter without gas.
