soo my engine. i rebuilt it. ran it like 50 miles put it on blocks.

changed the oil, and then started it again, and drove it around maybe 20 miles now.

I checked it today...

and it is yellow but looks like it has the super super fine metal particles in it that you get after you sharpen a knife on a wet stone with oil. you know almost like black stuff in it but more like metal black stuff?

change engine oil light is now coming on too.

like half the dipstick is covered in this black crap, and other half is good oil. it's not evenly mixed.

i don't think it's coolant - even though i am leaking coolant - could it be wear from the new piston rings that I am seeing? like litterally the metal wearing down from a new set of piston rings setting in?

or it some kind of chrome molly assembly lube from when I first had the bottom half of block reworked by a machine shop?

You will always have some metal particles in the oil after a rebuild. There may be machining particles that didn't get flushed, may be the metal working itself together. I did my oil changes as follows:

20 minute break in - change oil
500 miles - change oil
1500 miles - change oil
3000 miles - change oil

As far as different colors on the dipstick, pull the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert and pull back out. Then read it. You should also be checking it at temp.

That reminds me... I need to see if I'm at 1500 miles yet.

My builder recommended me to break the LT4 with regular oil and to change the filter only. I did the 20 minutes, 500 miles, 1,000 miles and a full oil change to Mobil 1 at 3,000 miles.

The first filter was cut it open and yes, it was full of metal shavings.

Yes, synthetics are a bit slippery for break in. They don't allow the rings to seat as quickly, etc.
Dyno oil does the job better.
