i have not driven my 1972 4 speed corvette in about 18 mouths. the car reversed out of the garage about 15 feet, but now i can not get her into reverse. all the forward gears shift fine, but she just will not go into reverse.

i'm not a gear head, i wish i was, but i never learned or worked on cars. i'd like to fix this if someone can help w/ what might be the problem. i realize i should not have let the car sit so long, but everything worked fine last time i drove her. thank you for any help!!

That's odd. The 4spds are very stout... and for reverse to just quit is really odd.

Can you get under the car and see if the linkage is properly connected?

These are hard parts... parts that sitting shouldn't effect.

Welcome aboard!!!

Welcome aboard. I agree with Andy sounds like a linkage problem.

My suggestion goes along with all above. Check the linkages. Even just a tad loose or unadjusted one way or another and you won't get the gear. Reverse always seems like the most 'picky' gear too.

If you can't get under it you may just have to have someone help you push it out to the street and drive it to someone who has a lift so you can get a good look at it. Sounds like linkage to me also. Welcome to the Guru!

Yea, welcome.

Stock shifter?

We need more info, what exactly happens when you try to engage reverse?

Does the lockout handle work normally? When you lift the tee, does it let you pull the shifter over far enough (to the normal place where you start to engage reverse? Does the lockput tee handle spring feel right?

If it's in the linkage. it could be gummed up from sitting. But, if that isn't the problem, the shifter needs adjusted and that should be done by someone who knows what they are doing. A pin has to be put in the shifter to lock it in neutral and then all the linkages need to be adjusted.
