That the 4.0 litre I6's don't have EGR.

can't say I have noticed that as a problem. The I6 pulls pretty strong.

It has been spark knocking a bit of late, so I decided to replace the EGR... oopsie, there isn't one!

I replaced the O2 instead. Going to run out in a few and test drive it and return the EGR.

Have someone hold a damp white cloth behind the tail pipe with it running, and have someone give the CAT / s a good whack with a mallet. Exhaust pressure backing up will sometimes heat the exhaust up a tad hotter which can have a few different effects north of it in the system, such as O2 sensors failing early, and I have heard of knocking as a result too in some cases.

The cloth will show what, if anything, was dislodged and evacuated during this whacking procedure.

I just thought I'd chime in before Tommy.

Ahhh, you bought an EGR valve for a vehicle that didn't have one?
Been taking advice from the kids behind the counter at AutoZone again???

OK, now let me see if I have this straight.

The Jeep does not have an EGR but you have one to return.

From this I can infer that the parts store was able to sell you one that fits the Jeep that does not need one. Am I missing something here ?

Bill/Ken,

You pretty much nailed it.

When you go online, they show an EGR gasket. Which makes sense, because the manifold is cast with EGR ports and has a plate over the EGR valve mounting point. So the gasket would be needed to keep from creating a vacuum leak.

However... She had to call some 800 number to "find" the part. I am guessing it is for a different year. When I popped the hood, there was no EGR, just a plate (it is supposed to be on the vertical edge of the manifold, below the throttle body. I never checked, I just assumed it had one. I mean, the number of modern cars without an EGR is minimal, to being a statistical anomaly!

I checked the vacuum routing diagram on the firewall... nada... plate where EGR should be... no sign of pipe from exhaust to manifold. Stupid low idiot that I am, "duh, no EGR".

As for the cat, it has 156k miles on it and is due for replacement before the next smog check. Whether the morons at CARB can deal with it or not. The hydrocarbon numbers were up last time, too high in my opinion. I know the I6 isn't the cleanest, but this was a bit messy to my liking.

The cat is located rather far down the exhaust system, next to the transmission, really. And tucked up, so either it's not getting hot enough before testing, or its dying.

Yea, well, Ken and I have never made a mistake.

I mean I'd never do something like forgeting to put gas in the racecar before going out for the practice session. Would I?
