There are two storage bins behind the seats. The one behind the drivers side has a sticker. That sticker has the build specs for your car. Those specs are called the "RPO" code, or Regular Production Option. There are several codes listed, I am sure... some are pointless (internal instructions and such), others actually define options to your car.

For example, you will see L83 on your sticker, that is the engine option. The other option you are looking for is the Z51 option code. That will confirm if you have it or not.

I will say this, the Z51 is exceptionally stiff. But even the base suspension was rock hard, firmer than the 85 Z51!

Check the C4 Guru RPO Codes Listing for more info.

Trust me, the 85 Z51 rides hard enough!

very good question... And I don't know an answer to it. You CAN order up a build sheet from the Museum, but that's not a sticker.

Another option, if you are replacing the console lid, the inner lid is screwed in, you can replace the cover and keep the inside plate with the sticker on it.

Another thought would be to take the sticker, scan it into a computer and print the contents to a simple white avery label. Just a thought...

At this point, there is no way to do this. I'm having this same issue because my 1985's sheet is fading badly. I'm considering scanning it in, at least to have some kind of record.

If you have to replace the console lid I would definitely keep the old one.

Mine never had the service parts RPO sheet. Maybe because my car was built in June of 1983, fairly early. The wheels on a 24 year old car are no guarantee of anything. My car has 4, 9.5" X 16" wheels. I know because I installed them.

The standard 1984 Corvette was the roughest ride of all the C4s, except for the 1984, Z51 car. The base car has spring rates of 431 lb/in front and 431 lb/in rear. The Z51 has 634 lb/in front and 525 lb/in rear.

Now hold the bus here a minute, 85, 86, and 87s all had 4x 16x8.5s on the FE1 cars. None of the FE1s came with 9.5s on the rear according to all the info i have on them all, and my own personal experience is yet to see an FE1 with anything other than 8.5s on it.

The Z51s came with wider rears, and in some models, wider all 4. Im talking about what left the factory though, which means very little to what may be fitted now.

The chart (http://corvetteactioncenter.com/tech/c4/susp_chart.html) says the '85 base suspension has 8.5" X 16" wheels all the way around and that the Z51 has 9.5" X 16" all around. In post #2 I said the '85 base had 8.5" fronts and 9.5" rears. Apparently I am wrong on that point. I apologize.

My 1984 Corvette Specifications Manual, which includes the MVMA Specification Form, contradicts the spring rares listed in the Corvette Action chart. I will try to post them shortly.

[written for my local NCRS newsletter and - I believe - fairly accurate]

C4 Corner: The Service Parts Identification Label

With the debut of the C4 Corvette in mid-1983, Chevrolet inaugurated a massively more detailed replacement for the body paint and trim plate that had previously identified some of the characteristics of a new Corvette. The Service Parts Identification label (SPIL or SPID) was located in several locations — most were located as specified below, though there do seem to have been some exceptions.

1984 - early 1986; driver side rear storage compartment
late 1986 - 1994; center storage compartment lid
1995 - 1996; passenger side rear storage compartment

Printed by computer at the Bowling Green plant, a Service Parts Identification label will tell the owner or potential owner many things, among them the complete option load-out for the particular Corvette to which it is glued. The SPIL also includes the VIN number, the paint type, the paint code (or codes, if it is a Corvette with two-tone paint), and the trim code. I can tell you that a photo of the Service Parts Identification label was a big influence on my purchase of my particular 1985.

With (it must be confessed) significantly better printing quality, the Service Parts Identification label continued on the C5s and into the C6s (it is now a bit smaller and consistently resides on the glove box door).

Amen, I used to own an '84. Rode like a cement truck -- but it sure could motivate around corners on smooth roads! :toothy5:

we're not talking about the area where the spare tire is located. Look in the back area just behind your seat. There, you'll find two small doors that lift up. These are what is referred to as the Storage bins. Look on the lid of one of them and you'll see the build sheet stuck to it.
