OK, give me a one word description of the new Indy cars. Ugly and Fugly are obvious and therefore not allowed.

My choice...Bulbous.

The cars look horrible.... Looks like a SAAB Viggen jet fighter in the front and a pair of old CRT TV cases behind the rear wheels...

I'm not thrilled with the new 2.2L Turbo engine formula either.... They went thru the trouble to allow turbocharged engines but somehow they don't even have any whine or whistle to them a full song.... some how they have taken everything great about turbo engines and screwed it up.

The cars all run right on top of each other, and draft around each other just like NASCAR so the sanctioning body thinks it makes for good TV.

Yea, the cars haven't sounded good in a long time. Not like they did in the '80's. I still remember sitting in the pit stands and the goose bumps when the first motor fired up on Carburetion Day.

It's just open wheel NASCAR anymore, just sucks.

I liked the race - I'll agree that the new design is not the prettiest. I'm not enamored of some of the new F1 designs either.

Hmm, I guess I never really considered  open wheelers to be things of beauty, so the new design doesn't bother me that much.  dontknow

1967 INDY Gas Turbine Car
Document Actions This 1967 Studebaker STP Special was built by Andy Granatelli. The side engine racer was driven by Parnelli Jones. In the 200 mile race (500 miles) at The Brickyard, Car #40 lead 171 laps. On the 197th lap, it suffered a gear box failure ($6.00 part) and eventually finished sixth. What might have been the impact on automobiles had the gas turbine-driven car actually won the race? You can see the racer in the museum in Indianapolis. The next year, "the powers that be" changed the rules to make the use of the gas turbine untenable in INDY car racing.

I saw them at LB in April... They have some interesting backfire behaviours when slowing for turns... lots of popping.

As for the exhaust note? A lot better than the last V8 sound. Those were just shrill.

I don't mind the look, actually. It's different. It give IndyCar an identity beyond being the bastard stepchild to F1.
