Car is '96 LT4. Hotcammed 143K miles, no cats.

Trouble: Took it out for a drive this evening. It was running well, no issues. After about an hour or a little more, as I was headed home, it started bucking briefly a couple of times, then cleared up. As I got to the light and had to stop, it got worse. Got around the corner, it pretty much acted like it was out of gas. Got it pulled to a side street. All connections seemed good, coil, plugs, etc. Attempted to start, good crank, a couple of fires then nothin'. Just like it was out of gas. Gauge read about a quarter plus, and it should have gas according to last fill. But, I hoofed it home, got my gas can and added more fuel to see. No go.

Replaced coil and icm last fall. Opti got a new cap and rotor in '08 (GM parts) New fuel filter about 3000 miles ago.

Plan is to try cold start in am (in case icm was overheated).

Rent fuel pressure gauge and check fp.

It was running well until that very moment, no misfires, so I really don't think it's the opti. (Oh, and no codes obdII)

Any thoughts are welcomed

Oh, I guess my question is, those that have had the FP fail while driving, does this sound familiar?

Check your coil wire where it enters the opti. It's known to fail--ask me how I know!! When you get the wire off, twist the boot and see if it's split--mine was --drove me nuts trying to find it! The boot gets split, and shorts against the back of the water pump--common problem. Now I carry a spare coil wire!

It sounds like you're on the right track. Check all the connections, check the fuel pressure at the rails.

The pump can fail when it's hot, so that's a possibility. It's said that the fuel in the tank cools these pumps, I have no GM documentation for that but it makes sense. So if it's running low it could heat up.

No it doesn't Matt. Fuel in the tank does not cool the pump, that's a myth that's been around for ever.

Fuel flowing thru the pump cools the pump.

But, yea "It sounds like you're on the right track. Check all the connections, check the fuel pressure at the rails. "

And if the cold start doesn't work, check for spark.

Which is why I said I have no GM documentation to prove it

Ha.

It's just a pet peeve of mine, it comes around on the fourms every couple months, it's like a cockroach - you can't kill it.

When LT4 gets, back to us on the FP readings, we'll go from there.

There's light at the end of the tunnel...(does that sound like a train to you?)

Checked fuel pressure, and there was none. The needle did not budge. Also, when turning the key, I could hear a click from the tank, but not the usual buzz that follows. So my guess is this means the pump electricals are working just not the pump?

Does GM still make pumps for these things? Autozone has an Airtex pump for about $85 w/ strainer. Or is there a specific brand you guys like for under $200. I'm going to be moving and between incurring those expenses and having to have this done w/in a couple of weeks I'd like to stay on budget.

Intallation looks pretty straight forward.

Filter is Fram and less than 6 mo/3000 mi. Not to say it hasn't failed, but not my top suspect. The pump has 143K on it, and given the nature of the stall (sudden and complete) I think it's the pump.

Go to Racetronix.com and get their Walbro pump setup, it's the best and reasonabley priced. A bunch of guys here have them.

But first make sure the fuel pump relay is working (it may be the click you are hearing).

Gm still makes the pump, you can get it at the dealer. But it was cheaper for me to get the whole setup from racetronix than to buy from gm with a discount.

when you try to start it, is there any pressure increase? If so, then the relay is dead.

But... rockauto.com has the Delco EP261. This is the pump used in the Turbo Trans Am of the late 80s and has a much higher flow rate. Last one, $50.00.

Lingenfelter sells Racetronix.

Thanks for the link. Looks like a pretty good deal there, alot less expensive than I expected to see. I like the kit idea w/ wiring and all attending items. It would not be nice to get in there and have to go back for all of this later.

And thanks everyone for your help.

I'll have more questions as life had put my baby on the back burner for awhile now. It is time to bring her to the shining star she can be. Thanks again, --Chris

Settled on getting one from GM. My brother ordered it for me and is waiting for me. $95 incl tax. I hope all of the other relevant parts are still in good shape.

The installation looks pretty simple.

disconnect battery
remove fuel door assy
unplug elec connect
unhook fuel hoses
remove 9 bolts
slide pump assy out (with care)
out w/ old
in w/ new

Any gremlins waiting for me around the corner?

--Thanks, Chris

no need to disconnect the battery.

Normally, I would worry about built up pressure, but I doubt that's an issue right now

The pump is attached the bottom of the fuel sender. replacement is self evident.

Oh, and welcome!

The new pump from GM will include the pump, a new rubber silencer sleeve, a couple rubber o-ring gaskets that don't apply to our vehicles, and one or two mounting rubber pads that may or may not apply.

You need a new fuel strainer ("sock") without a doubt. You can't reuse that old one. I would highly recommend a new tank gasket as well. Old one is usually cracked/dried out and may tear when you remove it. Bolts can be reused but are probably rusted and you should clean them up first with a wire wheel/die set. You might also consider some fuel hose and clamps to replace check valve/pulsator that tends to fail with age and cause fuel pressure leakdown. No mechanical issue with it failing other than longer crank times.

Here is when I did my pump, yours will be similar.

New pump is in. Started right up, no leaks, no flames, no explosions...yet. Drove it for about an hour, various speeds etc. Seems to be good to go.

Thanks everyone for your help. Nice write up w/ picks on the procedure Matt, thanks.
