Vette91 Super Ram on 383 - question on intake gasket water ports

Hi,

I'd like to put a Super Ram on my 383 with AFR #1038 heads and am wondering if it's OK to use the gaskets without the restrictions of the rear water ports.

What are these restrictions good for and do I really need them?

Best wishes
Eike

without pics, I don't want to misguide you. But typically water restrictors are for cold climate, to keep engine running at right temp. I live in California, so i dont use them.. Once again I'm not sure as to you project.

You can use the intake gaskets with no water restrictions in the back. The stock intakes use that, apparently it was GM's idea to keep the coolant back there longer to cool the rear part of the cylinder heads better. I dont know if it actually accomplished that or not. That being said, many have used the open flow style with no ill effects. The camaro is set up that way and is essentially the same motor. When I install my superram on my 383 soon I am using the open port design because that is what is sitting on my shelf.

Perfect. Thanks a lot. Here's a pic of both, open and restricted ...

I have always used the open style.

The intake flange on MOST SBC intake manifolds block the back water ports on the cyl head off anyway....

However, I noticed on the Accel SR intake base - It has water ports from the rear which pump water under the rear 4 intake runners...

That is a crappy design for performance.... heating up the intake charge is for driving in ALASKA.....

Personally I'd fill those water ports in the intake port full of epoxy and then it won't matter what intake gasket you run.
