Here's the passing alert system on the C6 at Sebring.
If you didn't know, the Corvettes had rear view video screens for the race with this interesting little accessory: |

Soooo it gets red as they get nearer, does it also indicate which class of racer is trying to pass you? That would be cool.....

Wouldn't that be confusing or busy when trying to concentrate on driving?

Well, to the average driver, yes. But I not knocking the average driver, you just drive on a road , thinking about stuff, listening to music, etc. What happens when you race is that you go into a state of intense concentration, it's a bit hard to explain. You shut out everything in your mind, you feel everything, the chassis, the engine, gearbox, the tire grip. The only outside thing you take note of is the cornerworkers (out of habit). The faster you go, the more everything slows down mentally (yes I'm serious), things run in slower motion. It's surreal but quite fun. Musicians experience this, and athletes like a baseball player at bat (but most sports players only get into this state for a short period of time). When you are racing. it's a half hour min and maybe way longer. I've also had this happen in martial arts. It's a very very cool experience. And you'll never get it driving your street car on the track. So, this system has huge graphics, and the concentration to use it is minimal. I actually think it would be very easy to use. Compare it to a Formula 1 steering wheel with 12 buttons, an LCD screen with lots of data on it. Interesting tidbit- I was watching an incar of Michael Schumacher in his F1, on the straight at 200+, hitting the scroll button looking at different data on the screen. |

It would be very helpful at night. The lights on endurance cars arem't aimed loke road cars where they are pointed down a bit to reduce the glare to oncoming drivers. They are pointed straighted ahead, and they are extremelt bright. We ran 2 Hella 6 inch driving lights on our car in addition to the headlights. We had to use masking tape on the mirrors in am X to reduce the glare and had tape stripes on the rear window. If you are in a slower class, the fast cars come up on you so fast, it's nuts. |
