Hey, is there anyone here who is familiar with Win 7 and sharing? I'm thinking JrRiflecoach might be someone who might be able to help.

Sorry guys.....I have setup a network for a small business and here is the situation.

I have two computers, identical in every way Win7 Pro, which are sharing files. #1 is the main computer with all the files which need to be shared. I copied the files from the old computer and put them in the shared folder on computer #1. I assigned ownership to "everyone". There are many folders with Excel docs and more folders with Word docs and one folder with Quickbooks Data.

The lady at computer #2 can see all the files on #1, she can even open them and modify them, but it will not let her save them. When she does try, it says that the file is read only and she doesn't have permission (or access, I don't remember which) and asks if she would like to save a copy, but if you say yes it then comes back with a similar error saying you don't have permission (or access) to the #1 computer. I might be able to save to the local HDD, but that is pointless as they don't want multiple copies of the same files floating around.

OK here's the kicker, when she opens Quickbooks, she can open, modify and save (back to #1) without a problem. All folders are residing in in the same Shared folder on #1. I have checked the security settings, ownership and all folders are set up exactly alike. I know I'm missing something, I just can't figure out what. WinXP networking was a breeze compared to the complex ways Win7 handles stuff.

I'm up for any suggestions. Thanks

Why don't you move the shared files off of machine #1 and on to an external networkable storage device. There are lots of affordable units out there that can be run in different RAID configurations. One disadvantage to having the files on machine #1 is that machine has to be up and running for access from machine #2. The external drive eliminates this problem. The RAID can be configured to miror drives giving instant backup.

It's not that big of a deal to have the files on #1 as it is on all the time, or at least any time #2 is on anyway. But that is a good idea on the external storage. If they wanted, they could take the external drive ti a "safe" location if the need arises.

I like the idea.

Check Tiger Direct for some ideas. Also, Frys.com.

Agree with this, I'm running a similar setup now. Depending on your needs you may want to also consider a cloud back-up.

They use Carbonite for backup. I'll suggest to them the idea of using an external network storage device.
