After years of thinking about it, I finally started blogging about eighties cars. I have cast a wide net on what models I write about - my last model entry was on the last of the rear wheel drive Malibus and the one before that was on the first AMC Eagle.

I would, of course, welcome any opinions or comments from the Gurus. The blog is (I tried to make it easy):

eightiescars.com

I didn't realize thay built cars (other than Corvettes) in the 80's.

Good luck with it.

Pretty cool.....nice work! I left a comment on the blog but don't know if I did it right....maybe you could do some research and run a column on the 84 Corvette....that would be interesting......

Marcus,

You did it right.

thumbup

I do have some Corvette content coming, but didn't want to get too specific to my particular issues yet ...

Whatever ya do, don't include the Ford Taurus. I had one of the first ones and the second one's and the third one's Got a new one every 40,000 miles.

They don't fit the definition of "a car"

Serious question: why did you keep getting them?

Company car John, I had no choice. And couldn't pay for options (like a SHO).
Put over 200k on them and hated every minute,

Utterly boring car to drive.

One year they gave us X per month and we bought our own.
I had an '89 Grand Prix, world of difference from the Ford.

I was looking at a management position in 2003, the car perk was $650 per month, insurance paid for and free gas.

As a current member of the work force, a lot has changed since 2003. A lot of companies that had cars now have mileage allowances ...

If I got that position, the last thing I would have been concerned with would have been a car allowance.

I would have doubled my racing budget and I spent a lot of money racing.

Very cool blog, John! I remember when people were stealing the seats out of those '82 Supras.

No mention of my '82 Plymouth Sapporo - they called it "the Japanese Monte Carlo" back in the day. It was the first new car I bought - it served me well, I kept it for 9 years. I remember they had an over-priced '63 split-window coupe on the dealer's lot that I could've bought for the same money. Probably would've been a better investment ;-)

We also had a new '86 Chrysler LeBaron GTS turbo 5-door. That was a great car until it burned to the ground. It was replaced with an '87 Nissan Stanza - a nice little sedan that we probably could've kept for 10 years if my wife hadn't become enamored with a '91 Chrysler LeBaron coupe that was a complete POS.

I think I may have owned the ultimate worst 80's car....I bought an 81 Chevy Caprice Diesel in poop brown. Why I bought it is lost in the mists of time...I thought it would be a good business car I think and good on fuel. At 57K miles the whole top end needed redone, valves and head work....when you put it to the floor the black smoke would pour forth and it must have taken 20 seconds to run a quarter mile. The folks where we lived asked if I could run up and down the block a few times to get rid of the mosquitos...what a pos.....and when I did trade it in they docked me 1200 bucks because it was a diesel.

I later found out that was the cost of the small block chevy engine that they were putting in them so they would sell......I did trade it on an 86 Ford Thunderbird with a turbo four banger that was a nice car....I was so pissed at GM that I went Ford for a period of time....which included a two door Bronco II and a Merc Sable wagon that we had a long time but put 2 trannys in it.

I also had a 6.2 Diesel Chevy ton truck with a 4M and 4:10 rear grears that would go about 65 mph and sound like the engine was in the front seat with you.....I put a 100K on that miserable bitch...and hated every one of them...

Geez you really got me going now......I did not like the 80's cars very much.....

I see the 80's 911's and 928's are on the list. Wouldn't it be great to own one? Or three? One at 27 years old another at 31 and another at 35. I remember when a car was old at 10 years old. People are a lot pickier now. Keeping them in good running condition is the key unless you like doing restoration work.

I was 15, bought a 60 Impala , 348, 3 duces, factory 4 speed, T-Bird hood scoop , rolled & pleated, metalflake seats. blew it up on the dragstrip.

Bought a 56 Chev wagon, 283

Bought a 60 Pontiac, 389 3 duces, towed one of our racecars to the strip with it,

Bought a 63 Corvette in 69 for $1,300

Only owned one non-Corvette since then, Datson 280 Z, bought for $2k, owned 2 months and sold for $4k.

carburetor - French for "don't touch it!"
