Since I've seen this question frequently asked on the forums, here it is.
Click The top pic is the D36. Note that it actually has one more cover bolt than does the D44. |

The quick and easy, down and dirty way to tell, is the bolt in the center at the top and bottom. The D36 has a bolt in the center, top and bottom. The D44, on the bottom only. Even if you can't tell, in a pic, say, which is the top or the bottom, two center bolts...D36. One center bolt only...D44.
