The slave is cast instead of that questionable welded thing.

No leaks, nothing.

Expect to pay about $100. It was made in Taiwan. Part number NCF 73116.

Thanks Andy, I'll check to see if I can order online from NAPA as there doesn't seem to be any actual stores near me...

Hey Don, it's been a while for sure. Yes, as the New Agers say, Cat #1 made his transition about three years ago, a week shy of 22 yo. Other big change was I got divorced. If you're afraid that I'm now catless, fear not. While the ex took just about all the furniture when she moved out, she left most of the cats. So I'm still happily scooping away...

I last replaced mine in in December 2010 and thought I was past that epidemic of universally bad after-market choices. Apparently not, as this one is leaking after around 2000 miles and has to be topped off every couple of weeks. Has anyone replaced theirs and gotten at least oh, say, five thousand miles out of the new one? If so, what brand did you go with? TIA..

Never mind, I just went to the DeWitts site and it is a direct fit. I seemed to have recalled a few years back, the shroud needed to be modified. Apparently not anymore. Three models - one with an engine oil cooler, one with an AT oil cooler and one with no cooler...

Not sure what two sided carpet tape would do to the seat leather (you could try it on the back of seat down low first). Or how about just rigging a bungie cord or two?

Is the DeWitts a straight remove and replace on a 96 LT4 or are there modifications necessary to make it fit?

Update:

Based on wear, it was time to replace the other 315 as well. JC Whitney had a couple of the 315s in stock for $420 a piece. The Nitto 555s had great reviews so for $725 shipped I got 2 315/35/17s, 2 275/40/17s, new stems and lifetime road hazard insurance (if the tire can't be repaired, they replace it free). $80 to mount and balance and life is good again.

BTW, if you need a couple of 275/40/17 GS-D3s in good shape, they're listed at the other place....

When it came to the bleeding part, me too, I guess. Here's my experience:

If you don't want to read through the entire thread, here's the pertinent part:

"..As for bleeding, no problem there either. Didn't pre-bleed it before installing, just an initial gravity bleed, about ten minutes of me in the car on the lift pumping the clutch and the tech underneath working the bleeder valve (and occasionally getting on a step ladder to top off the reservoir) and the job was done..."

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, they're on back order there as well. Jim Garren (toptechx6) sent me a link to JC Whitney and they claim to have them in stock ($420 a piece). The Discount Tire guy has Nitto 555s in that size for $200 a piece including shipping. Don't want to run Nittos on the rear and GYs on the front so for another $320 I can get two Nitto 555 285-40-17s for the front. Seems kind of crazy to buy a set of new tires just because of a blowout on one especially because there's plenty of wear left on the fronts. However, if the Nitto 555s review well (haven't looked yet), then I just might buy a set and sell off the GYs....

I won't bore anyone with the details but suffice to say I need one of the above. However, both Tire Rack and Discount Tire are out of stock, back ordered and have no idea when that size will be back in stock. The Discount guy said there are none in any GY warehouses and the Tire Rack guy said the last time they had any was in February. And apparently, Goodyear isn't giving any indication as to when they might be available again. I don't want to buy a used one of eBay or forum Parts For Sale sections if I can avoid it. Any help would be appreciated, TIA...

Steering wheel click - anymore to it than an annoyance?

Justed noticed today, thinking it might have been from all that wheel turning I was doing without power while trying to get the car on a lift to finish the clutch slave install.

It's bugging me alright but can this go to the way bottom of the C4 to-do list? Or is the car going to start turning corners by itself and/or the steering wheel comes off in my hands at 60mph?

TIA...

UPDATE

Well, I haven't been feeling too well lately and wrestling around under there on my back with no elbow room just was exacerbating the situation. So I had the car towed up to a neighborhood shop that rebuilt my Ranger's transmission.

It was just as I thought: it took more time to get the car up on the lift than it did to get the slave in. If you've got a little room to manuever, it'a cinch, thicker flange, OBDII O2 sensor in your way or not. As for bleeding, no problem there either. Didn't pre-bleed it before installing, just an initial gravity bleed, about ten minutes of me in the car on the lift pumping the clutch and the tech underneath working the bleeder valve (and occasionally getting on a step ladder to top off the reservoir) and the job was done. Free AAA tow, $20 tip to the tech and $50 shop charge and I was good to go. Learned a few things in the process and if/when I have to do it again, I'm pretty sure I could do it without the lift. Thanks again for all the help...

Then I just pump the hell out of the pedal.

Some people get all worked up on this shit. It's not hard.

You have dirty nasty fluid in there, undo the bleeder line, let it all run out. You want to get some new fluid in to flush out any impurities, water decomposed rubber, etc.

Got it, thanks again. AS for dirty nasty fluid, that leaked out long ago. It's been leaking so bad, I've been topping it off every ten miles or so. The old one looks to have been leaking both from the seal and the mandrel...

A couple quick questions:

The illustration in the FSM shows the bleeder valve on the side of the slave (90 degrees from the hose connector) however, both the old one and the new one are on the bottom of the slave (180 degrees). The instructions say to rotate the bleeder so that it's pointing up. There's no way that can be done given the length of the line.

Also, the FSM has you bleed the slave with it disconnected from the clutch housing. Someone at the other place (theadmiral94)stated:

"btw, the reason to NOT pressure bleed the slave before install is that it pushes the nose too far out, making it difficult to install, as well as pushing the piston into non-machined areas of the cylinder walls, often damaging the piston seals at the same time. Further, there is a plastic ring/retainer that is designed to limit the max travel of the piston-rod, which if pushed too far, can break that plastic retainer or worse -- push the piston and the rubber nose completely off (ask me how I know this).."

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c4-te ... lutch-slave-cylinder.html (Post #4")

So how should it be done?

Flange on the aftermarket is thicker than the original which causes one problem. You can either grind on the flange, or get new longer studs.

Thanks Jeff, the problem is it seems there's no room in there to get any leverage to put pressure on the slave and push it over those studs. Also, once you do manage to get it on, how do you keep pressed on long enough to get those nuts started. I'm sure this would be a lot easier on a lift...

Got the old one out and the new one connected to the line but how are you supposed to depress the pushrod enough to get the slave flange over the studs? There's very little room in there to get any muscle on it and the O2 sensor is right in the way of everything. Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

If the donor laptop and original HDD booted up XP ok (albeit slow from neglect) initially but the HDD isn't recognized during the XP install then it's got to be a HDD controller driver issue. During the initial XP install, there's a point where you have the option of installing a third party controller driver and prompts you to install the driver disk. That's when you have to feed it the controller driver...

I think what you need is the driver for the hard drive controller which is integrated into the laptop motherboard. Windows XP has a ton of drivers for various hardware but it doesn't have all of them. And it wouldn't have the driver for your laptop's controller if it's newer than XP (or maybe the latest XP service pack). That's usually why Windows can't see the hard drive during the install process. And that's why the eBay loaner with XP booted up fine - it already had the driver that allowed it to access the hard drive...

Do you recall if your replacement was cast or DRM? I saw a few posts over at the other place where it was tough getting the cast ones on as its flange was thicker that the OEM style.

BTW, just picked up a couple cans of the GM fluid at the local dealership - $10 for 8.5oz...

That doesn't look bad at all. Even the interior is better than what I would expect. And aren't those cloth seats kind of rare?

I certainly haven't read every pertinent post but in seven years of forum time, I can't recall ever hearing of anyone breaking a 3.07 Dana 36, even with a modified engine. It seems it's the aftermarket 3.54/3.73 gears that come apart, and not just on modified cars at the strip either....

I'm getting pretty good at it seeing as how I now have to top it off every 25 miles or so. I was all set to try to get the new one in tomorrow morning and then I read over at the other place that DOT3 brake fluid isn't good enough and I need to get something that's only available through GM...

Well, for the first time, I noticed some fluid on the garage floor under the passenger side. I called RhinoPac Friday and they said their slave was cast. I'll call the rest of the manufacturers next week just to see but I'm ordering a Rhinopac replacement today. Looking in the FSM, the job looks simple enough but if anyone has any tips or tricks for this novice, I'd appreciate it, thanks...

Oh yeah, any thought on this u-joint tool from Harbor Freight?

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf ... item.taf?Itemnumber=38335

Or can I get the same thing locally for around the same price ($50)?

I've got to order some other stuff from Rock Auto anyway so I thought I'd ask. They're anti-galvanic and non-greasable. Part #231C for the halfs ($26 per), #369C for the drive shaft ($15 per). TIA...

Yeah, you're right about that. Just figured another way to get the word out about this place. One other benefit is that you get to know a little bit more about the members here. Then again, maybe it's better that you don't...

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if the slave is a Corvette only part or are there other vehicles that use it too? I know the ZF trans is used in other cars but I'm wondering if the clutch and related parts are specific to the ZF C4s...

Thanks for all the input. I'll order the Wagner and let you know. I was thinking of calling them first to confirm but based on Josh's post, there might not be any point. If it turns out the seals are backwards in the one that's in there now as Brian mentioned, then I guess I'll have something for the next Pay It Forward thread...

Thanks Andy. Someone also emailed me the number 12509313 which corresponds to the same part number listed for the Dorman slave at Rock Auto. The two AC Delco slaves list numerous part numbers (one mentions #19183276, the other mentions it replaces 18030212 #18030212, 19176972. Also the Dorman mentions an 1 1/16" bore while the Wagner mentions an 11/16" bore. I'm starting to get a bit confused...

Anybody know what the "offical" part number is for the slave? The FSM calls it a clutch actuator cylinder but I can find no reference to it in the C$ parts number michrofiche. In fact, the only references to "clutch" in the parts list are for the AC compressor clutch and AT clutch packs. The only reference to actuators is to headlights and a few other things not related to the manual transmission. In fact, I can't find anything in the microfiche related to the manual transmission clutch...

It is a one piece cast part and seems very nicely made. It has been in the car now for 2 months+ and is working VERY well.

Thanks Andy, do you recall what you paid for it?

The time between reservoir refills is getting closer and closer. No apparent leaks around the master, no fluid under the carpet so I'm assuming it's the slave that's leaking and the clutch dust is soaking everything up (nothing on the garage floor, either). I know as recently as a year ago there were problems with the quality and assembly of the replacements but was wonderig if that situation has been resolved. I also found Central Coaster's and Josh's threads and will read them in depth before doing anything but would welcome opinions on my choices of brands. Price isn't the primary concern but quality is. Rock Auto has the following in stock:

RHINOPAC ($66)

DORMAN ($67)

WAGNER ($77)

PERFECTION CLUTCH ($83)

ACDELCO ($91)

Anyone have any decent miles on any of the above? I'm not married to the Rock Auto selection so if anyone has a recommendation outside of the above, that's fine too. TIA...

It was my understanding that the stock LTx catback is not really a bottleneck for the stock engine. As for killing most of the noise, I've got a stock LT4 (295HP/310TQ on a Mustang dyno) and inside, it's quiet. In fact, the tires on it are louder than the exhaust...
