I just got a 1984 corvette, front engine compartment hood weighs a ton, so I ordered 2 new stabilus lift o mat gas hood struts, identical to old ones, installed them perfectly, and hood still WEIGHS A TON! Is there some other part that could be missing or broken? a spring? I just sold a Delorean, and the heavy doors had a Torsion Bar, to take most of the weight and a gas strut per side. Is there some other support mechanism? I am in DEFINITE NEED OF HELP!! Thanks anyone that has a suggestion.

Welcome to the site.

Unfortunately, the hood does weigh a ton. In later years, there was a large gas strut (not those mini ones) to help lift it. I can't remember if the 84 had those brackets, but I don't think so. You may be able to retrofit it, I will have to look up the info later.

Welcome to the site Mike. I'm sorry you're having this problem. I don't have any experience w/ 84s to be able to offer any help. I do know that the 8s have more ducting and air passages than the other C4s, so the hood will be heavier from the start.
That being said, I can't believe you're the very 1st to experience this issue, so I'm sure someone has addressed this before.
If you haven't already, Try googling this issue to see what comes up.

Mike -

I found this thread -

http://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/c ... hood-prop-yes-i-know.html

It appears it can be done, but you will need upper and lower brackets from a newer car, the piston (rod), and you will have to modify the hood with a nutsert, etc for the upper bracket.

Hope that helps.

I was going to suggest that upgrade.

You can get most of the parts from a Corvette salvage, like www.vette2vette.com.

Get new struts, tho.

The early C4s (including your 1984 and my 1985) did not come stock with any hood struts. All they had was a single scissor support. In (I think) 1988 they went to dual struts.

I believe he's referring to the lower assist rods:
