Well Gurus, I wish I had better news to report from the first race of the season but it just didn't work out that way. The new MT 275 Pro Radial tire has proven to be a major challenge for me. I went out for first round qualifying with what I thought was a very conservative tune up, intending on going A to B, just to see where we were. Didn't work out that way. This happened instead.

I guess if anyone ever had a question about how my car looks from the bottom.... Drink it all in. Video of the run is here on my Facebook. If your not on my friends list just send me a request.... I'm sorry but I can't find a way to post it otherwise if you don't have a Facebook. I do have the corvetteguru FB page saved but it won't come up when I try to share it to there.... not sure what the heck I'm doing wrong.

https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100009284950613

When I say conservative tune up I mean conservative. Last race of the season on the 28X10.5 slick I haad the progressive controller set at 35% to 50% in .5 (half) a second. Then 50% to 100% in .3 second. To start on the radial I backed it down to 25% to 50% in .5 second... then 50% to 100% in another .5 second. When I let go of the transbrake I felt like I was prepared, as a driver, for anything.... The car hit the tire about like it normally does and pulled the front tires about 1ft in the air initially... kinda fooled me into thinking nothing crazy was going to happen.... Then it started to climb.... I realized the car was too high but way too late... I started dragging the brake (staying WOT) but it didn't seem to do anything and then the car shifted into high gear and I heard the bumper hit the ground all at once. I knew I had to lift and that it was going to be a rough landing.

The major damage is confined to the oil pan... which is totally junk. The short -12AN fuel supply line from the fuel cell to the fuel pump will need to be replaced (got drug on the ground). There is some very minor flattening to the header tubes and scraped on the exhaust system but nothing that will require any repair until this winter.

I have to call Kevko about getting a new pan built. I also have to fabricate up some limiters for the front suspension. The shocks were full tight (rebound) and looks like limiting travel (extension) is the next move to keep the front on the ground.

Might have to stack weight on the front as well but I don't want to put ballast back on (just in a different place) that I was allowed to remove this year. I only have to weight 3050lbs this year and the 84 with no ballast weighs 3090lbs.... That 100lbs off from last year is a big deal.

I'm very thankful my car stayed straight for the most part and no one got hurt or crashed. The damage to my car (and ego) can be repaired. I’d feel horrible hurting someone or crashing into some else’s car. Next race is May 14. We are going to do our best to not do this again.

Yea, no wheelie bars allowed.... makes the class exciting....

Just got off the phone with Kevko. Pan is ordered, should take 2 weeks to be built and shipped.

Wow, that's a tough break. I'm glad you and the car survived, though.

Good driving, that you held it straight is what matters.
Crashes on the strip are usually pretty bad.

If you can't run wheelie bars how about a sensor?

Not traction control, but tilt?

I don't know how I would even do anything like a tilt sensor. My car is bare bones pretty simple as far as electronics and engine management. The only thing you use it as a trigger to kill power, would be ignition retard or nitrous activation.

As far as traction Control, Davis Electronics makes a TC box all the "street race" guys run (we run them in our dirt late models as well) but it's like 5 grand and my class can't run them anyway.

Really the best thing to do is to use the suspension to keep the car on the ground and pour all the HP I can to it and get it down the track as fast as possible. You'd be amazed what limiting the front travel (extension) or using a strap/chain to terminate it abruptly, will do.... Also I got be better prepared as the driver to recognize what the car is doing.

This was the first nitrous pass on those 275 radial tires and I (as the tuner) just misses the set up, then missed driving (as the driver) properly.... lol.

You sure don't have a LACK of traction.

Glad you are ok... that had to be scary. The rear tires were off the ground... a little more speed there, and you could have gone over.

I look forward to hearing about the solution.

Is the bump adjustable on the rear shocks? If so, was it set soft?

When you say "Bump" on the shocks... typically that means the compression setting but I just want to make sure...

My rear shocks are Penske 7500's.

They are common "double adjustable" with separate Compression (40 clicks) and Rebound (19 Sweeps) adjustment. Clicker adjuster (actually an allen head) on the compression and then a sweep window near the top of the shaft for the rebound (what a PITA to adjust on the car).

I have them set dead center, 20 from loose on compression and about 3/4 tight, 15 from loose on rebound.

The front shocks are Viking double adjustable but they use clicker knobs for compression and rebound. 19 adjustments for each one.

I was 10 from loose on the compression and full tight, (19 from loose on the rebound.

Somehow, I missed this post.

Yea, bump = compression.

My only thought at the time was that the rears were a little soft allowing the rear to squat very fast making it easier for the front end to come up.
