Excellent write-up on Opti system:
http://www.superchevy.com/how-to/0310 ... -understanding-modifying/

Linked to F/B C4 page; not many there will get much from it, as opposed to here...

Bill, Andy, Matt, maybe integrate into one of tech stickies, without my name - need no 'credit', then delete this one???

Interesting article, however:

OptiSpark Maintainence:

Buy your 92 or later C4.

Buy 2 new Opti's, keep one in your shop and one in the car.

And, the article stated that the 92-94 "tended to retain moisture", amusing.
GM designed the Opti with a cheap paper gasket for the cap and then put 2 coolant bleeder screws right above the water pump.

Yes, some will preform for many miles and some won't.

It's the "some won't" that's the problem.

the larger bearing in the gen 2 opti helped a lot with lifespan.

The Mitsubishi sourced optical sensor is killer durable... 300k or more. A friend worked at a Dodge dealer and saw a lot of them come through in Mitsu engines, and with tons of miles on them, still going strong.

A simple fix for the Gen 1 is to pickle the cap to opti chassis with copper RTV, then, using some line and fittings, a coolant drain bypass will work wonders.
