| 85vet | Is the water heater shut off valve required? | ||

Noticed a slight anti-freeze leak and finally found it. The water shut off valve for the heater is leaking. it is part of the solid tubing section of the heater/water lines in the engine compartment and has a vacuum line going to it.
I see that these were only installed on 85 through 87 so I am wondering if it can be completely bypassed and eliminated. I would appreciate your comments. Thanks, Jim |

bypass it as in bypass the heater? or just run straight to the heater core?
There is a steam vent off the back of the engine that attaches to the valve rig you refer too... I donno what that will do in the long run. |

You can take it out and replace with heater hose. A manual shutoff valve would be a good idea.

I want to eliminate the hard lines that the bypass valve is part of and run heater hoses directly to the heater core. If our systems are closed where would steam come from? Sorry if this might be a stupid question. Thanks, Jim |

Not needed as proven by later C4's that didn't get the valve. Mine leaked too, so I cut the bitch out.

DropTopCE, the coolant does run through the heater core all the time on 92 and up. No good reason not to.
With the coolant running through the core all the time and not sitting still for months, youre not having coolant go stagnant in the core, and as long as youre looking after youre cooling system, the heater core should last longer with coolant flowing full time. |

If the heater core ever leaks, I'll just remove the hoses from the core and butt them together. I never use the heater anyway (car's in storage for the winter months) |

My car had the water shutoff valve bypassed and removed over 21 years ago. There have been no adverse effects.

Thanks for all the input. I don't think I need it, but I will check to see if I can buy it used for reasonable $'s, otherwise it is GONE.
