WASHINGTON — [marq=left:0e8ca96a80]A missile launched from a Navy ship struck a dying U.S. spy satellite passing 130 miles over the Pacific on Wednesday, the Pentagon said It was not clear whether the operation succeeded in its main goal of destroying a tank aboard the satellite that carried a toxic fuel that U.S. officials said could pose a hazard to humans if it landed in a populated area.

"Confirmation that the fuel tank has been fragmented should be available within 24 hours," the Pentagon said in a written statement.

No wonder China is nervous...We have just proven we have ability to take out satellites.....whether spy, defense, or communication, they can be hit.

The thing was an ice-ball too, with probably very little heat signature.

There was no heat sig at all, from what I heard. My brother researched this ordeal pretty hard for weeks. I guess they supposedly reprogrammed the software so it was satellite guided or something like that instead of heat seeking. Brother said we have had the capability since like 2003 to use navy missiles outside the atmosphere and guide them by satellite but this was the first it was used. It is amazing to me that we can sit at sea and shoot down something that is in orbit travelling at 17,000 mph. I can't even lead a running deer right with a 30-06.

I'm sure glad they saved us from that potentially dangerous environmental hazard. Not that top secret spy satellite technology and information retreval would have had anything to do with it. After all it's old tech. Right?

Nor was it an opportunity to test the system on the world stage at a very important time in the global missile arena.

Oh Yeah... and go Dad! That was the missile system my dad worked on leading up to retirement.

I checked about an hour after it was said to happen, didn't see anything. The eclipse was still going on.

They said it would take 24-48 hrs to fall and the fuel would do wierd shit as it entered the atmosphere, but I have no idea when/where to look.

I read the satellite was travelling at 17000 mph. How did a ship launched
missle accelerate to that speed?
