AH! Finally one I know!

It's been awhile since I did this, so bear with me...

You will need to have the top off. You have to remove that long piece of trim that goes across the top of the windshield. The inside piece that the rear view mirror goes through. (so you probably wan to take the rear view mirror out. I think...)

Then you need to access the visors through the top of the place where the top gets screwed in. The upper corners of the windshield, that would be underneath the top. I believe you need access underneath as well, and that is why you need to remove the center trim at the top of the windshield.

There are hard plastic covers there, and a pot metal piece underneath. I can't remember if you need to remove the plastic cover or not, but I think you do. Almost positive.

When I took mine apart, I discovered one of the pot metal pieces was broken in half! So I got a new one of those and the center trim piece from someone that was parting out a Z on CF.

I still have to install those pieces, and I may do that this weekend. I should take some pix if I do that.

Andy, I'm assuming that you're trying to take the whole assembly off. I did this on the 92 a while back to lube the shafts. The shaft was extremely tight. I pulled the nut & spring and reinstalled the nut flush with the top of the threads to protect them. Used a brass punch and a fairly large hammer to pound them out. If I remember right, it took 3 or 4 hits and I also moved the visor back & forth between each hit. My main concern was not screwing up the threads and I didn't. After lubing, they came back out fairly easy ( Kinda like the crank flange).

The thing that had me swearing and throwing tools was getting the nut and spring started back on the post. I pulled the nut with a 1/4 in. drive and had to go to a 3/8th so I could get both hands on the rachet while putting all my weight on it.

Now that I think about it, I'd shoot a little PB blaster down the shafts first.

Oh crap.... All that work, and I didn't answer the question... I guess I got a little excited. I did not have any trouble getting mine out, but maybe I did not disassemble the part you are talking about.

Sorry... :shaking:

Don't use a large hammer unless you want to replace the windshield at the same time. Top off, remove two screws to get the plastic trim cover off, take of the nut and spring, but the nut back on so yu have something to tap on without buggering the threads. Tap, Tap. No Go. Soak with some BP Blaster and come back in the morning. Tap some more.
It really should be an easy 5 minute job.

ok... so I was right... tap the sucker out.

I have all the plastic off, that's not the problem, it's getting the damned visors themselves off!!!

Thanks, guys!

Friend of mine took his off and had them totally redone, plus he installed a home link at the same time. I believe it cost him about $75 total. Just a thought.

I've had mine out since maybe August of last year. I don't drive the car that much, but I really have not missed having them in there, and I enjoy the improved view without them.

I had to knock mine a couple times with a small deadblow hammer and a punch. I am just replacing mine...found them new on eBay for $ 125 for the pair...both with vanity mirrors (I hate the map strap). Still need to reinstall them...been busy on other areas of the restoration of the interior.
