Had a guy email me asking about a trade for my Z.

68 Yellow Vette, non matching BB (originally a BB 4spd car Im told).

Looks good on the ouside, not sure about interior. Told it was decent to nice shape. Dont know much elseabout it. Looks like no PB, No AC.

I was originally looking for a 68-72 to drop the drivetrain from my 67 into (big hp solid roller SBC abd T56 6 spd) and get rid of both the Z and the 67...Kind of have a little of both in one car and hopefully not miss either

.Some Vette, some brutal musclecar power too all wrapped up in one. .

I dont know, just dont know . Hate to pull a BB and Muncie outta this thing..

Opinions?

One thing to consider is that the '68 is the first year of the C3. There was some quality issues from the factory. And to top it all off, there are a lot of '68 specific parts(like the push button doors). However there are some faithful '68 owners out there that absolutely love them.

As you probably know, its the same chassis thats in your '67. Not a stellar performer by any means. Its a rough ride, don't handle too well and the car is heavy. One of the biggest enemies of any year C3 is rust. The major area is the "birdcage". Water leaks horribly bad in these cars and sits and collects in the windshield frame and near the body mounts. It would be a deal breaker for me if I found this area rotted.

Even with all the above said, I have 2 C3s and I will never go back to anything else. Theres a feeling driving them and looking over the hood! They can be raw fast and they still impress the public regardless of how fast they are. People notice these cars, I think even more so than the early models.

Snap some pics and let us see!

His 67 is an El Camino, not a Vette... he wasn't clear on that! I can see why you made that assessment!

As for the 68, early C3s are coming up in value, but the motor is not numbers matching. 67 and 68 Vettes shared the same power plant lineup... that means a 427 with 390-435 hp.

I would get the VIN and start decoding with the black book. Here is why, if the CAR was once an L88, it's worth a ton of cash, there isn't a lot of them, and even without the OEM motor, the CAR is worth money. It's still rare and a motor can be put in to replace that matches via date codes and such.

Top dollar for a normal 68 BB is about $45~$50k. Somewhere in that neighbourhood. That's top dollar. An L88, IIRC, somewhere about $80k, I will have to check. The ZL1 doesn't really count... there are only 2 and both are accounted for, but expect over $500k.

In short, the 68 is not loved like the 67. And it's current values reflect that. And in the years of $150k 67s, the 68 has not followed suit. So I doubt it will go stupid anytime soon.

If it was me, I would pass.

Considering what you REALLY want out of the car, I would look at selling the Z, getting an SR3 chassis and finding a banged up roadster to build everything around. You would need C4 suspension to bolt up, tho.

We can talk more if you want.

A good friend of mine owned a low mileage (about 50K) '68 4-speed 427 rag top for awhile, about 3-4 years ago. It was a nice example. We only had to fix a few minor things on it and he did a re-shoot of the original color. I didn't like the car at all from a driving standpoint. The 390 HP 4V version of the 427 was a slug IMO. My then still stock '95 LT1 could run circles around it. The handling was pathetic as were the brakes. It was more of a chore than a pleasure to drive. He sold it after owning it for maybe a year and netted a few thousand on it. But still, it didn't even bring $20K. I wouldn't have given 10% of that for it if I had to keep it and drive it.

To me, your early El Camino is a cooler, more unique and much more well built car than any C3. Finish that bitch and enjoy it. And to trade your ZR1 for this thing? No f'n way would I even consider it.

Oh wow, I had a '66 camino. It was a pretty cool car! My dad still has his 69 and 70 caminos. There are not too many of them around, I agree. They are really cool to look at, but they have their own issues. I am a C3 guy, so I would say though that I personally would rather have a early C3 Big Block over a Big Block El Camino. That just my opinion though.

All I have to contribute is to point out that there is a '73 for sale locally with 59K miles, and a numbers matching 454. Auto, PS, PB, A/C, T-Tops, Tilt-Tele. Factory yellow with tan interior. It has been for sale for months in the high teens. It's now at $17K and still there. I know the '73's are less valuable than the full chrome bumper years, but it should give you some idea on the value of a non-numbers, non-A/C car.

It's not worth your Z!!!!
