Since 9/11 I've been to 4 funerals for fellow USAF Combat Control Team members KIA. Looks like I have another one to go to soon.

The only one you've possibly heard of is TSgt John Chapman, who made the cover of Newsweek, was postumously awarded the Air Force Cross (second only to the Medal of Honor) and had a Navy (yes Navy) ship named after him for his efforts to save SEAL Team member Neil Roberts during a clandestine portion of Operation Anaconda in the high mountains of eastern Afghanistan to surround and destroy a large group of al-Qaeda fighters in March of 2002.

The slide show on the attached link isn't that long, if you have time to watch it.

Thanx,

Mark Hughes (xccter)

Sadly, we’ve lost another Combat Controller to the War on Terror…HR

From Col Marc Stratton;

To the Special Tactics Family,

It is with great sadness to tell you that we have lost an ST warrior deployed from 21 STS yesterday in Afghanistan. TSgt William Jefferson (WJ) was killed when the vehicle in which he was riding was struck by an IED.

TSgt Jefferson is survived by his wife Kristy and daughter, Tyler. I ask you to join all of us here at Hurlburt and our deployed locations as we come together to provide support and love for the families, friends and teammates of our fallen warrior.

I'm so sorry to hear.

I've only been to one war funeral, and it was so striking and so memorable. One of the things that caught me off guard, was the amount of young people there in their early 20s who were mourning their friend. They all seemed like they had barely had a chance to live their lives, and one of their peers was already gone.
