does anyone know a way to measure the clutch pack clearance without having to purchase the dial indicator tool listed in the gm service manual? also the manual states to connect air hose to the first of 2 plugged holes at the rear of overdrive unit, any chance i could connect it to the other hole and accomplish the same thing ie push the piston? The 1st hole plug is stripped in such a fashion getting it out would likely ruin the threads which will result in a headache of the size and intensity i would prefer not to experience. again i'd like to thank in advance those who without their help i would be totally screwed.

are you sure you want to rebuild the 4+3. i have been doing ALOT of research about transmission you can ask anyone on this forums there all mad at me about my transmission problems. theres a couple options you can choose from. If you have $3800 for the transmission then go with the TKO500 or 600. if you dont and want a 6 speed there are two options there. you can go richmond 6 speed which is a direct swap over(you can use same clutch and bellhouseing) or you can go ZF6 which is the 6 speed transmission they use in the 89-96 corvettes but you will have to change out everything. look for my 4+3 transmission post and central coster wrote everything you need for the swap. or you can fix your 4+3 if thats what you want. if your overdrive unit is messed up and thats all you need shoot me a pm. i should be pulling my OD unit within the next could weeks and probably selling it.

Ps. ill start from here on out sorry bogus

Just an FYI,I found a couple of places that would rebuild the 4+3 for @ $900-$1100 but the warranty was 30-days.

Man, these responses are extreme.

Mark, can you tell us what got you to this point? What are the symptoms that lead you to believe that your OD unit needs rebuilding?

I hate to see you go through a gyration that is unnecessary. Rebuilding an OD unit should be avoided if possible.

Are you following that how-to guide from corvetteactioncenter, or the factory manual? I've never needed to use any of the "special tools" in the factory manual for anything.

im in the last stages of the rebuild. the annular bearing thats part of the carrier assembly was bad. i've replaced it as well as all seals and o rings and clutch disks. i've measure for end play and am within spec. the last thing before putting back on the car is checking clutch disk clearance

.002" to .008" for the end play and .050" to .070" for the clutch disk clearance. these specs are from the gentleman Brian at S-K SPEED INC. from whom i bought the new carrier assembly.

Here's the writeup I was referring to:

i used that along with the gm service manual. its an excellent supplement to the manual as it clarifies some of the instructions that i found to be a little vague.
