hi casey,

thanks for the reply mate.
i like size look of the 13 " rotors and it would be great to have them fitted on the rear with 4 spot calipers thats all!!
some of the awsome options out there are very expensive though!!
cheers

Nah mate, too big for the rear. The J55s are only 2 piston calipers.

The rear brakes don't do jack anyway.

When it comes right down to it, the rears account for about 20% of the stopping force. In short, they keep the rear stablized under stopping.

Too much rear brake and the car can become very unstable in a trail braking situation, re: unexpected snap oversteer.

There was someone on CF that was selling a rear brake kit that used the stock caliper to keep the e-brake and uses a Porsche caliper for stopping.

Short of all out road racing, I don't see the need or point, to be honest.

If I was going to spend the $$ on brakes, it would be in the front. Wilwood, Brembo, AP Racing... Sadly, Stoptech doesn't make brakes for the C4. At least they didn't when I checked last, but I suspect their C5 system could be retrofitted.

We have a bug in the ranking system... I need to figure it out!

As for brakes, be cautious of one thing - space. If you put real big brakes on, you will have a wheel fitment issue. So whatever you do it must fit the wheel combo you have selected.

Also, more pistons does not = better braking. It's about clamping force as much as anything. I don't get the feeling you are road racing, so the later GS caliper would be more than enough. IT looks nice, powercoated black with "CORVETTE" cast into it. The only fault of the C4 caliper is the design itself! The lack of a heat vent can cause them to over heat and spread open, dropping effectiveness.

I would not mess with a proportioning valve. There is one in the master already, and unless you are going road racing, it does nothing but cause wrecks. Besides, it might piss off the ABS.

If you want a nice upgrade, do something along the lines of the C5 brake upgrade.

The J55 option is for 13" FRONT ROTORS ONLY. The rear rotors are the same as all other C4 brakes. Since they never made 13" rear rotors you will have to explore other options.

you can fit 13" rotors to the rear... it's just whether it's worth it or not.

Yes you can.

No it's not. You need larger in the front to compensate for the change in the rear.

Correct, you can tell the difference when racing.

Well, it helps in the fact it provides more clamping force over a larger area when you have a larger pad.

With all of that said, You can run a 13" rotor in the rear. If you are trying to retain the factory caliper for parking brake, you will need to find a 3/4" thick rotor on the rear, and have a custom hat made.

This is my rear brake set up.

13" rotor, 4 piston Brembo caliper, factory brake is retained for parking brake only.

I am running a 4 piston Brembo caliper up front with a 13.5 rotor.

If you want to add more unsprung weight to the rear, by all means. Thats about all youre doing considering this is a street car.

Glen i dont know what wheels youve got on that car at the moment, but if they are still sawblades i dont know how big a brake youll fit under them, the C5 brakes would go very close to hitting.

This car he has is a STREET CAR, its not a race car, its a massive overkill, there are much better and smarter options for the money.

hi jeff and casey,
thanks for your replies guys.
jeff,thanks for the picture mate.
well i class my vette that im slowly building up as street race car actually considering it will be having approx 500 rwhp!!!
case im still running the saw blade 11" wide rims as i like the cooling effect they give the brakes and the desgin of them!!
if i use a wheel spacer with the saw blade rims
will that help give clearance for the larger calipers??

cheers

Wasn't the point, you said he couldn't, which of course he can. Sometimes a little more weight is better, especially in the back.

The man wants 13" brakes on the rear of his car, I think you're missing the point in telling him what he wants on HIS car.

And guess what, the rear brakes I showed, they are on my street car. Maybe some of us drive a little harder than you do and need the extra brake capabilities.

HP isn't the reason, it's gonna be a descision based upon driving style. If you expect to use all that power, you would want more brakes.

spacers won't help. it would do very bad things to wheel geometry and potentially compromise structural integrity. In short, spacers are a bad thing... and I would avoid them at all costs. Considering the options, that would be a bad one.

I knew someone had the brake conversion... I didn't remember it was Jeff. I assume, Jeff, you saved the specs for manufacture?

Nah, just wadded it up and threw it away today, according to Case there are better things to spend money on.

ah, got ya.

I wonder if you can scratch out an approximate design on a napkin. That would be ok.

Jeffvette - I was wondering if you are still making the C4 to C5 brake upgrade brackets for the early C4's ?

FWIW, the rears can do 50% of the work during light braking and nearly 35% at full tilt.

There is a 13x.87 rotor out there that'll fit a wilwood hat allowing you to fit the stock rear 88+ caliper but you'd need a custom adapter to mount it. I need to track it down as I need more rear bias.
