Can I check TPS with standard probes from my Blue Point DVOM? or do I need to buy any special test probes?
I have searched up the process for doing this but it wasn't too clear exactly what I had to do. In one sentance it said to hook a scanner up to the diagnostic port under the dash and then in another sentance its saying to check the voltage with a VOM. What's the chances when I installed TPS into my new throttle body it was magically set correctly? HA HA I think this is the last thing I have to do before start-up unless you guys can think of some things I should go over before I turn the key? I got most of the old gas out and put in my Toyota. The toyota loves 14 month old gas... no problem from the little beast. I put 5 gallons of brand new fresh high test in the Vette tonight. Getting ready |

Get the correct probes. I have seen to many people screw it up trying to improvise.

I stab the wires in the same place every time. If you get about 4V at idle you stabbed the 5V wire instead of the ground.

Also - The FSM says that when installing a new throttle body or TPS that you need to hook up a "Tech-1" instrument so that the EBTCM can re-learn the throttle postion for proper ASR operation.
What's up with that? Is there a way to do this at home without a "Tech-1"? |

I was going to suggest you use a scanner to read throttle position -- guess I still will. You can read it with the ignition turned on but without starting the engine. I use an Actron CP9145 -- which worked great right out of the box and gives you a bunch of useful real-time info.
I'm pretty sure that the Tech 1 is GM's version of a scanner. It's used to read the throttle angle percentage. Where in the FSM did you read that it was needed so the EBTCM can re-learn the throttle position? I can't find it in mine - also a '94. I'm on page 5E2-139. |

Its in the emmission book in one of the earlier sections. I'm at work so I can't find it now, but I still have it turned to the page, so when I get home I'll let you know. I have been looking for a good scanner that will work on my 94. Do you suggest the Actron? or is there something better? What's the price of something like that? |

I use a Actron CP9145 also. I bought this one about a year ago and have been satisfied with it so far. I have used Actron scanners for years with NO complaints. I also bought the adaptor cable to use with OBDI. But there are much better scanners on the market, for much more money! This one does just fine for my needs. It is a good value for a good tool IMO.

I like the Actron because it cost me $94 new, including shipping -- I hit Amazon.com at the right time. And because it is a solid unit. And most of all, because I hooked it up to my '94 LT1 and it worked the first time!
Besides all of the error codes, it reads the following info on the '94, which gives me plenty of things to play around with. There are plenty of scanners that do a lot more -- but they are a lot more expensive as well.
