bogus | Material Question - 1987 Fan Shroud | ||

Anyone know what the fan shroud is made of on the 87 Vettes?
It looks like conventional fibreglass, however, I want to do some repairs and if it's SMC, I will need a different epoxy. Ideas? |

Hmmm... I HAD an '87. I'd have guessed PVC. Or some type of vinyl polymer... (plastic). |

I don't think so. It appears like fiberglass. The area that is damaged has fibers all over it...

I always thought mine was standard fiberglass, but since I've never seen SMC unpainted, I guess I couldn't really tell.

I'll bet it's fiberglass just because of economics, car makers will save money anyware they can. And SMC wouldn't be needed there. I looked at the 92, looks like glass to me.
I'd just use standard matte and resign. Ever use masking tape over wet fiberglass? |

what would that do? I have used filliment tape on superglue and epoxy... That rocks. I need to either find my hardener or buy a new tube... |

As per the 1984-1986 Corvette Technical Information Manual & Judging Guide (First Edition), the
"radiator shroud is unpainted black fiberglass reinforced plastic" |

It's a little trick when doing a repair and saves some sanding. You can lay down 2" masking over the wet glass and roll it out. I use a wallpaper seam roller or an old spark plug socket. The pressure of rolling it out squeezes the air bubbles out making a stronger repair. And the masking tape will pull off farily easy leaving a flatter surface. I also make serrated rollers to work the air bubbles out of wet glass when using a mold. |
