And currently at only $84,800. How would you like to the guy to have drug this thing home for a song and then discovered it's secret identity?

How can it be restored without the motor and transmission?

If it WAS ALL there, wouldn't it cost 75k - 100k+++ to restore?

No thanks.

Yes. figure $100k to own it, another $100k to right it and what have you got? A car worth $250k.

And value going up. It's got all the right stories. Impressive.

Similar rare, restored factory race cars of this era have easily fetched a half million and up. Original engine in a race car is rare anyway but the original type 421 SD engines that came in these while not common are out there, having come as options in larger Pontiacs of the era.
I've got an idea that the price will spike quite a bit higher before it's finished. Look at the number of bidders. Reportedly Jay Leno is one of those bidders. I'm not sure how that is known but if that's the case, he'll no doubt end up with it if he wants it badly enough.
Getting back to rare, Ford, Plymouth, Chevy and Pontiac ('61-62 Catalina) all had factory lightweight cars in the early 60s but all were made in higher numbers than these. Even the rare and highly desirable '64 Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt 427 lightweight, there were about 100 of them produced. Compare that to 12 of these, the majority of which are either documented to have been destroyed or whereabouts unknown.

I agree, these are uber rare. I am not so sure about the half mil value anymore. Muscle cars have been sinking over the last 18 months, then again, no stories (meaning well documented) cars are still worth a mint.

Since DeLorean and Wangers kept all the data, PHS has the numbers to back this car up.

Ah yes, but this is hardly just another muscle car. Bidding is still inching upward and is now over $86K with four hours to go. I expect a big surge towards the end.

Here are some pics of the car back in the day that this car has been verified to be:

It just jumped to $90,300 and still 3 hours to go.

In back is one of the 6 coupes. The wagon is 1 of the 6 SD wagons. It got nitrous (w/o forced air) in 2000, and did 7.82 / 175+.

Unreal yup.

http://www.grocerygetterwagon.com/history.htm

EDIT: The 7.82 car is a clone of the original, according to another source...

From a chevelle forum, on price guestimate:

I'll bet some back door deals to secure those peices are already being made by folks doing the bidding on the car body.

Count on some MAJOR detective scramblin' goin' on right now OHYEAH...

Probably including a couple of armed guards, with TEC-9 MAC-10 tactical machine pistols too

Try again uh huh. ( I woulda' said 100 to own, and another 100 to fix would be a stretch to get 250) 250 BARELY got the rust.

The last SD Tempest supposedly took 20 years to restore.

Anyone willing to spend that much on one probably has a few more, which is what the parts were for.

I read the ad. Anybody who spent $200+K on a rare Pontiac tempest race car probably has a few clones or other Tempest projects laying around they needed parts for. No conspiracy theory, sorry.

Whereabouts unknown.

When there's only 12, they ain't hard to find.

Children of deceased owners are hiding them from siblings for value, or don't know what they have 'sittin' in the barn'.

And the bid sat there for 5 minutes uh huh!
