Don't get me wrong, Rick, you are kick'n ass here. It's just a few things that need to be tidied up to make it professional and polished.

I would format this in Word Pad or even Word and then cut/paste it into the blog editor. If the blog has issues with enters or what not, find a better editor for the blog. One long paragraph like that gets hard to follow.

Also, all the "So this" and "So that" becomes repetitive and will start to erode credibility.

Again, overall, I give your blog a B+ for content and overall style. That's really good considering you are not a professional writer!! This can help you if you decide to become published. The more polish, the less editing.

Also, let your wife read over it. A second set of eyes is really important. I could also help out as you ramp this up.

I think this could become very important. You have a lot of skill and knowledge. You are inherently a good communicator, it just takes practice to become GREAT.

I am really tempted to take the Dale Carnegie courses on public speaking. They are very good from what I hear. Good enough for Ned Jarrett to parlay his NASCAR career into being the best spokesman the sport has ever seen!

Excellent job, Rick!!! Keep it up, I will be looking forward to more of your war stories from the trenches!

Thank you! I do appreciate the feed back, I know I have issues with spelling, gramar. I asked the wife to read it but she is not interested, she hears these stories and lives them everyday with me so she does get burned out a bit. I like the idea of word pad and breaking up the writing. I didn't do any editing or proof reading other then running the spell check, as I just banged out my thoughts and posted away. I will try to work on this in the future.

I am also trying to setup an Adsense account so maybe I can make some cash from from my work. even if it's a only a couple bucks it would be nice, but I am having issues with Adsense..

The sent me an e-mail stating that my account was under review but ready, and that I could / need to post the code, while I cannot even login to get the code that needs to be posted as my account is still under review accoring to their webpage.

Apparently many people have had similar issues...

But, good luck Rick.
I did visit your blog, the site has a pro look to it.

Outside of a blown trans 6 hours from the house, I've never had a mechanic work on any of my vehicles BUT (after reading your Ford experience) you're right on about communication.
It's as much the customer's responsibility as it is the service writers.

Service writers: If you're lucky (and the dealership is lucky), you get one that's been around a long time and knows a good bit about cars. On the other end you get one that's the same guy at Autozone who asks you if your Corvette has a V-8.

Hiring service writers is a bitch, way harder than hiring a tech because you only have so much budget to work with and dealership owners don't seem to understand the need to pay these guys/gals good money.
And when you go to hire one, out of 20 applicants, you get 19 idiots.

Post repair inspections - tough at times in a dealership because you have 20 mechanics working and only the shop foreman (who's usually tied up helping a tech with a difficult repair) and the service mgr. to make sure everything's done right.
It's a freekin' rat race every day.

That's why a small ASE shop's much better (except warranty repairs where you have no choice).

BTW, I was the Service Director for a Ford dealership for 3 years. 3 years of my life thet I wish I had back.

I agree!, one of my reasons to create a "blog" is to bring about awareness of the industry, a look from the other side of things, as many customers do not understand why auto repair is so "expensive". There are many behind the scenes costs and issues they are not aware of...

I remember a customer talking (while at a car show) about how he was talking to different shops about an estimate on headers for his C5, and one shop seemed a little high, and he said no thanks, the shop said well if you come out to our shop you will see why we charge what we do, we have state of the art this and that ect. His response, I don't care where the work is done, as long as it's reasonable and done correctly..

Anyway if any of you have any auto repair questions or topics corvette or not, or just auto related I welcome any e-mails to Rick@RickAnthonyMotorsports.net I will try my best to answer them on the blog..

Thanks,
-=Rick

I read it. I have never really blogged so I can't tell you much. The Envoy story was entertaining. The blog about keeping up with the current technology is great for customers information. I am fortunate to have two great mechanics that walk me through what's wrong and what neeeds to be done. I trust them and they are open and honest. My wife has another mechanic she uses that's straight up. No smoke and mirrors, no stories, just the facts. Some repairs can be expensive but when a job needs to be done, it's done right, with quality parts at a fair price. Note, I did not say a cheap price, I said a fair price. The shop where my Corvette mechanic works charges $105 an hour. He probably makes around $30 an hour. My Porsche mechanic charges about $80 an hour. There are local hacks around here that $60 to $75 an hour and of course we have some shade tree, now mobile shade tree mechnaics that will go even lower. We had a heavy equiptment mechanic work on our diesel skid steer for 8 hours for about $300 and a $725 part (actual dealer part cost with no mark up) He was just determined to fix the damn thing. Turns out the part wasn't the cause but we replaced it anyway due to it's age. Geez. Did I get long winded or what? Good luck with your business and your blog.

Speaking of mobile techs, there are alot of them especially on craigs list, I have worked for some customers at their home in the past but it was only for good customers of mine and when the car was not driveable ect. otherwise it really can be counter productive, when you need a certain tool or part, and having to make a trip back and forth really cuts into your time. Definitely alot of hacks out there..

For example, we had a jeep come into the shop (I didn't work on this one this time but saw the issues ect) that supposedly a laid off chrysler tech was working on previously. the jeep has issues with the dome light not working and a battery drain issue, the problem was traced out to the radio circuits, we found 12 volts on one of the speakers with the radio then un plugged.. after digging and inspecting we found that several screws had penetrated wiring harnesses, the screws were from some diamond plate that was installed at the lower sides of the body with sheet metal screws, the main area was the drivers side just below the door, where the harness runs through the rocker panel area. just and interesting find...

The previous tech the customer was working with, told him I wouldn't worry about the dome light issue... yet there was an obvious issue with the battery going dead ect. good thing we were able to work on it and find the problem.. also suprisingly none of the fuses had blown, and there were atleast 4 wires peirced at each area there was a screw...

I'm sure the protective pretty looking diamond plate is going to cause more corrosion and damage then protect any thing...

Thanks! The suit was actually from our wedding day. The C5 is my mother in laws, very minor upgrades no blower as of yet... I agree I am not going to post peoples names ect. I'm not looking to embarrass anyone or anything like that, I just want to share some of the stories from the shop and my opinions of the business in general..

What are the benifits pros/cons of each type of blasting media?

Removing carbon, paint, rust - sand, ground glass, alum oxide, black beauty slag.
Sand is cheap, I keep a 50 lb bag of Home D playsand in the shop, BUT I only use it outside, not in the cabinet.

Walnut shells & plastic media have their uses but what I think now:

Sand leaves a finish that's too rough unless you're doing a car frame (which you should pay someone to do cause it's a PIA).

Glass bead's are the only way to do in the cabinet, they remove rust almost as fast as ground glass and (big +) they clean aluminum and brass beautifully.
Heavy rust takes a bit longer (my compressor will run 105-110 psi with the pump running constantly).

Glass does break down (so does sand) and you have to add some at times, I've done a lot of C2 parts so far and only bought 50 lbs, figure 50 will last a year to a year and a half.
50 lb at HF - $42.00

The other thing I've come to really like is soda blasting.
Soda blasting leaves a finish that's even smoother than glass (way smoother) but will only will remove very, very light surface rust. It will remove light paint.
The big thing is you can use it on plastic/fiberglass.
I'm using a cheapo HF handheld blaster that has a little hopper - $14. 50 lb of soda - $34.
BUT soda can only be used once, not recyclable like glass, so I do it outside.

And, do you have a vacuum system on your cabinet?

I do I bought the reclaimer from HF as well... I have yet to really figure out exactly where I am going to place the cabinet and the vacuum in my garage yet.. I may have to try the glass though, I just bought sand to try it out.

Yes I actually own a flush machine myself. I would reccomend flushing it based on age and mileage. Are you planning to work on it yourself or have a shop/dealer perform the work? if you are doing it yourself, you can do a pan off service and get most of it, some people try to do flush by removing a trans cooler line and letting it pump out while filling the trans, however it can be messy, and difficult with only 1 person. and you run the risk of dry running the pump.

Looks like this is in the wrong section but I'm sure a mod can move this post for you..

Don't know what you're runnin' Rick but glass bead at Harbor F is about 30% less expensive than the places I've been getting it (Summit).

Good to know, I trying it with some medium sand, as I just used it for the first time recently.. But I may try to glass out as well..

What are the benifits pros/cons of each type of blasting media?

And the cuts on the tubing can't be made with a tubing jigger (using a hole saw). So, there a bunch of fitting/grinding to do. The welding's fairly easy.

I can easily see an hour's labor there, maybe more. Just my Opin.

I agree, sometimes things that look quick simple and cheap to make, take some time to fab up, skills, tools, time all cost money... Especially if you want a quality job..

yea saw this on the news.. so if we save our pre-1982 pennies, and then wait we can melt them down and sell them for their copper value..

So all those who hoarded them would be selling them, possibly causing a decrease in copper prices? I would imaging it takes alot of time and money to sort these and then sit on them.. so would it really be worth it?

Amsoil is great stuff, and yes expensive... I have had some great results with their ATF, had some customers who tracked their C5 Z06's who had their trans temp warning come up with the OEM fluid, drained and refilled their trans with AMSOIL syn atf. And problem gone.. so far I've been impressed....

Now that being said, yes mobil 1 is a great product as well. The obvious and most important when it comes to oil changes and fluids in general, is changing them and within a reasonable time. Along with using a quality product..

Yea, well, of course, I saw them all summer on Craigs for $50-$100 but that was when I was lookin' for the drill press.

My chinese (Summit) blast cabinet slides around fairly easy.

Drill press is of my list too, but will have to wait probably till spring when I can make some more money, usually there is a big Fall rush before storage for people to have their vettes serviced, then with winter and the holidays usually I have very little work, then spring it goes nuts again. So next year maybe I'll get a press..

Damin it Rick

I need one.....NOW!

There's 2 on Craigs, one 20 T with no pic and one that looks new A-frame, 20 T. Both HF, for $160.

I have a waterpump rebuild kit laying here just waiting on a press.

depending on the state, you may not beable to drive it on the road.. I think here in IL all the work must be done by a liscensed rebuilder and inspected by the state to have the title made into a rebuilt title... otherwise maybe a good track car?

Was he looking for just a code reader or for a scan tool with some data? You can pull & clear trouble Codes through the instrument cluster on all modules, no tools needed.. but for data a scan tool would be needed..

Good Morning CGs!

Well, good news for me. Last night I installed the new modem/router for my new DSl service. No more internet connection problems (hopefully!). So I can try to catch up on what I've missed the past few days.

Weather here has taken a turn for the worse (ie, cold!). Yesterday was nasty rain and wind and the temperature dropped significantly. It's about time to let the vette sleep for the winter. I should try to wash it first...lol.

Going to dinner tonight with Rick, a few friends from work, and few other corvette guys. Should be fun.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Matthew

Yep, I'll be rolling in the "stroker" tonight... Spent too much time cleaning the car for storage to get it dirty. Will be putting it in the trailer this weekend.

Looking forward to dinner as well!

I think Tuner Cat has an option to turn it off in the PCM, however I believe that the Central Control Module is the issue on our cars. In other words... I think you can enable the fuel by diabling the VATS in the PCM, however the Starter Enable Relay is controlled by the CCM. You could probably bypass the relay either at the relay socket or wiring. though I would imagine the theft light may be on ect..

They appear to have been picked over, there is probably still some good stuff there. Though the tranportation costs probably out weigh any gain...

Wow interesting.. I wonder how much it weights compared to stock.. also how fast is it, 1/4 mile time ect.. And what did it cost? Also wonder how the clutchless setup works, amd how hard is it on the trans ect? Always thought this would be a fun conversion... but maybe not on the vette..

Welcome to the site.

If it were my car I'd change the fluid based on age.

As far as the dealer flush, they probably use a fluid flush machine that replaces the fluid as it's running with the thermostat open so pulling the knock sensors isn't necessary.

Matthew

That won't get the crap out of the block.

No matter what you still won't get everything. I agree pulling the knock sensors may get a little more junk yet out of the block no doubt...

However if you damage a sensor or the threads on the block ect, you maybe be opening yourself up to a new problem that could have been avoided.. also keep in mind rust is a big problem in the "salt belt" and many of these cars have the original knock sensors that have been installed for over 16 years.

I'm not saying I disagree with your process at all, I am just saying that flushing regularly will help avoid the build up in the first place and to take caution when pulling the knock sensors if you choose to...

I own a flush machine, so I do mine every 2 years going to do the vette this year before I put it away for the season.
