In reference to the prior question, to make this fun, you have now identified the wrong HP rating… what should the right horsepower rating be for that engine (advertised)?

I have to go along with most everyone else here......you can find a great car for less money. I bought my '98 C5 locally about a year and a half ago, 50k miles, always garage kept (with a cover on it), well maintained, documented, local car in honestly "mint" condition. His asking price was $16,500, and I negotiated him down from there. Be patient.....they're out there. Do you ever come to "Vette Expo" in Sevierville in March? Always many, many good buys there. There is even an event in Morristown, TN this weekend that features a swap meet and car corral, I think.

http://www.corvette-guru.com/modules/ ... hp?topic_id=13114&forum=7

Not too far from the Triad area, if you want to check it out.

FWIW.....we love our C5. I also loved the C4, previous C3, etc.

Obviously I am going to be in the minority here, but here's my opinion anyway. I used the Tire Rack ratings and reviews as a guide, and I put the General Exclaim UHPs on my C4, and loved them (15k+), so when it came time for tires on the C5, you can guess what I bought. I just could not see the difference in price being justified, (and unlike others, I had a bad experience with the last set of Michelin tires that I had). I've put almost 10,000 miles on them, and love the ride, how quiet they are, and they way they corner (and my car sees plenty of spirited driving on mountain roads). Since I've never had any desire to drive at or near the top speed of my car, how they would perform at very high speed is not an issue to me. Unlike some others, I do feel these to be a "high performance tire", and in fact you can tell quite a difference when the temperature is low outside (these are considered "summer" tires).

I have a good buddy who has Kumhos on his C6, and my son has them on his C3, and both love those, too. I would not hesitate to put those on my car sometime, if I should decide the Generals aren't cutting it.

Bottom line, make yourself happy. Perception can be everything, but I've never been a "brand snob", so I just go with what I like as long as it meets the need.

Tom,
Thanks so much for posting that. I just watched it all, and learned several things that I know will come in handy in the future. It is amazing how some of the "myths" about such issues can grow to be gospel, and I wonder how many folks, like myself, have installed a CLB just because "everyone says I need it", only to find out later that it may do more harm than good. What Paul says about the potential for damage to the BCM resulting from the voltage difference from a CLB makes me really glad I unhooked mine........and by the way, since doing that, I have had no more issues......period, and I think it's been long enough now that it would have shown up. Thanks again.......I recommend anyone with a C5 watch these videos..........it's obvious this guy really knows the system!

Those look great, TeeBee............you were obviously very lucky to run into a deal on the colors you wanted!
Lookin' good!

I recently re-covered mine in a similar pattern, but with pewter/black colors. A guy down in Douglasville, GA (Corvette Originals) made the skins for me. I'll post some pics when I get a chance to take them!

By the way......how did the deal with Paul go? Did you get to videotape it?

in my best Chevy Chase voice (he was on SNL back when TV was still entertaining...lol, for you young bucks!)

We spent the weekend at "Vettes in the Valley", presented by Corvette Enthusiast Magazine. Maggie Valley, NC is a great place to visit, anyway, but the show made it much better.

Since I know he won't post anything about it, a certain Torch Red C3, that happens to be on the header of the Guru C3 section, was judged "Best in Class" in the C3 class! When I can get a copy, I'll post a pic of Trae1976 accepting the trophy from John Nichols and/or Andy Bolig (can't remember.....getting old, you know!) Anyway, I'm proud of the all the work he has done on the car, and obviously someone else noticed, too!

On a side note, to TeeBee and anyone else who has read any of my posts regarding my C5 CLB issues........still no problems since I removed the CLB and returned to "stock", albeit modded by the GM recall. If the message was going to return, I feel sure it would have by now......but I'll keep the updates coming.

Rick,
You pretty much confirmed what I thought. When the CLB is "hooked up", you do not hear the actuator.......so obviously it is "fooling" the system into thinking that it has done it's job. I am assuming, however, (and I stress ASSUME) that in my case, the switch in the actuator either does not make during the initial install, thus giving me intermittent "Pull key......" messages, or it does not stay in that position (maybe vibrates enough for the switch to open?). So now, that I have hooked back up the original system, the actuator cycles and DOES make the switch, so (so far anyway) I have not gotten that code. As far as throwing a trouble code......it has not done that, even before my last change.

The guy, Paul, that TeeBee refers to says that the recall fixed the problem (by replacing the lockplate), and that as long as I have a strong battery, I will have no more problems. I suppose if the actuator motor failed, then that would have to be addressed, but since it really only moves in and out now, without actually engaging anything, it should last a while, I would think.

It just seems to me, that with all the talented and smart folks out there, someone would have come up with a sure-fire, one time fix for this.

Thanks for the discussion. I will keep posting updates as time goes on, and maybe this can someday be resolved for every C5 owner out there.

Rick,
Since it seems that you have some experience with these, let me ask you a question. Since I have never gotten the "Service Column Lock" message, it seems to me that my problem is that the system "thinks" that lock pin is not completely retracted. Is there a switch on the lock pin actuator that must be made in order for the system to work properly? And, if there is, could it not be either disabled, or permanently "made" so that the CLB would then work all the time? I'm only speculating, basing my guess on all the pages of posts that I've read, but I've never seen where anyone really tells all the parts involved in making the system work.

With the CLB in place, I'm fine 80% of the time, and even when I get the "Pull key..." message, it clears and I can go. I'd just like to eliminate the annoyance.

Thanks in advance!

So what happens when you get the dreaded column lock?

Well, that worried me, too, Matt. However.........because of the recall that was performed on the car, the column does not lock. It didn't before, it doesn't now. Hopefully my only problem was that the computer didn't THINK that the lock pin was retracted, and now that it cycles again, it will.......only time will tell. By the way I kinda cheated. I didn't remove the CLB.......only unhooked it and rehooked the harness. If I get stuck out somewhere, I can change it back by removing 4 torx screws and re-hooking. Heck it's not hurting anything, so why take it out?

Well, thanks to TeeBee's info, I went searching and found the gentleman he is referring to over on the Corvette Action Center forum. He suggested that I did need to remove the CLB, and hook the system back up as I had found it. I did this yesterday, and have driven maybe 75 miles since, with no issues. There is indeed a change.......I can now hear the actuator cycle when I turn the key on, and again when I turn it off. I am assuming that it is making a switch that tells the computer that the lock pin is engaged or disengaged, and since the CLB disabled that function, it did not always get that signal. I am speculating, of course, but it seems logical to me. Time will tell........I'll keep updating as time goes on.

By the way, thanks TeeBee.......and I still want to see that video! Paul seems to know what he is talking about, and I'm sure there are other things about these cars that I need to learn.

Another update...........this time not so good. Today, it came back. Only once (of course it has always been intermittent), but after a stop, when I started the car, I got the "Pull key........". On to plan "B". I'm going to take the CLB out of the circuit, and hook it back up just as it was when I got the car. The steering does not lock anyway, so perhaps this will create some sort of change.....

I agree with Matt..........while I would offer less, it's not really that overpriced, IMO. One thing to remember though......no matter the mileage, things like rubber suspension bushings, brakes, etc. will have to be serviced and much of it replaced. The brakes on those cars are notorious for attracting rust in the calipers, and the rubber just turns to powder. On Trae1976's car, (it was a 1 owner, by the way), even the rubber in the harmonic balancer had deteriorated to the point that it had came apart at some point prior. And, you could put your finger through the rear bumper without much effort. I happen to like the looks of the "rubber bumper" cars, and I had a '68 and loved it, too. Unless you are dead set against making any changes to the car (in other words, NCRS style ONLY, and there is certainly nothing at all wrong with that philosophy, just not my style), I think for the money, those era C3's are perfect to build a great, functional, beautiful, car that fits your personal taste. There is more than one example of that owned by the guys that post here!

Okay, an update.

Today, with the help of Trae1976, I went in and found the two main "ground" connections (G201 and G202). They are located in the footwells, under the sill trim, near the front door jam. According to a post on the CF, by a former GM Tech, they had discovered the grounds to be an issue while they were performing the "recalls", and started doing this. I took both grounds loose, and used a dremel with a small sanding drum to remove the paint from around the hole where the screw goes. I also cleaned the connections with the dremel. We also ran a new, dedicated wire from the ground point G202 (passenger footwell) directly to the battery negative terminal, through an existing grommet in that same footwell, just above the fuse panel.

Now, it's too early to tell if this has solved the problem..........but, we left here at approx 3:30 this afternoon, and drove at least a couple hundred miles, complete with stops to eat, to gas up, restrooms, etc., and not once(knock on wood) did I get the dreaded message. That is probably the most times I've stopped/started the car without the problem since it started happening. I'll keep posting updates as time goes on, but this may just be a step in the right direction.

Okay, there is no other relay in the footwell.......and after looking at some more on the CF, it seems the extra relay was part of the recall on the Manual trans cars only. And Matt, I think you are right about the "K harness" being what I found tie wrapped to the steering column..........but the puzzling part to me is why was it not hooked up? I have read that the K harness recall fix was prone to failure. Wonder if the previous owner had the same issue I have and disconnected it, and reconnected to the original hookup? That is the way I found it when we installed the CLB. I'm thinking of going back to that setup just to see if there is any change. After all, I had no problems until AFTER I installed the CLB..................

It's been a while, and I don't recall exactly how I figured it out. But I encountered this in my brother's (formerly my) C5. There is a relay installed as part of the GM recall (p/n and location varies by model year and revision of recall you had done) that is wired into the circuit such that it sends a signal to the BCM "telling" the BCM that the column is unlocked. This relay is installed electrically in place of the actual column lock and if it fails or starts to fail (as was my case) the BCM will think the column is still locked and will cut the power to the fuel pump.
"Pull key, wait 10 seconds" allows the system to reset itself and try to set the relay to the correct latched/unlatched state.
By the way, said vehicle was also a 98 A4. Faulty relay was "installed" (actually tie-wrapped) to the steering column behind the knee bolster. But I've also read that the relay can sometimes be found in the passenger footwell near the fuse panel.

Hope this helps.

Nelson V.

Interesting.........and thanks for the info. When I installed the "column lock bypass", there was a relay(?) tie wrapped to the steering column.......but it was not hooked to anything. The plug on it looked like it would hook up where the bypass went, so I removed it......but I still have it. However, it was not hooked up.......to anything. I will look in the footwell tonight and see what is there. Did you ever get the "Service Column Lock" message? That is something I have never gotten.......period, but I understand what you are saying about the BCM getting the correct "message", so that may still be my problem.

Thanks again for the suggestion. At least it's something I have not yet looked at.

Okay, on the "other" forum, this question would be met with more sarcastic remarks than you could count, and yes I've used their "search" function. With that out of the way, I need some help or advice. Here's what I've got:

Occasionally, when I start the '98 A4, I get this message. As most of you probably know, the car will not run.....it will die as soon as you put it in gear due to the fuel shutoff. I DO NOT, nor have I ever got, the "Service Column Lock" message. The column does not lock, and has not since I got the car last June. When I got the car, everyone said to install a Column Lock Bypass............so I did. The car had been through the GM recall process, and by the date on the unit we removed when we installed the Corvettes of Houston bypass, it was the later recall ('04). Per suggestions on CF, I must have a bad, going bad, battery. So, I replace it with a Red Top Optima.........no change. They all said to clean the "pellet" on the key with alcohol......I did it to BOTH keys I have........no change. One guy said to always wait until the "Security" light on the dash went out after inserting the key, but before starting the motor...............seemed to work, maybe, for a while, but this past weekend, even that didn't work.

Now, every time it does this, if I do remove the key and wait, it then will start and run just fine on the second try, at least it has so far.......and that is just a bit unsettling to me, not mention annoying, so I want to fix this thing. I think it must be something with the security system, but I'm at a dead end. Anyone got any ideas?

It may come down to GMs procedure using the torque wrench. It is a very good wrench, and calibrated. I used a machine and calibrated it for a 71inch/#'s. So, I know what the wrench needed to be set to to get 71inch/#'s. Now as the ASR section is clicking, I had to feel the click on the wrench. That is why I did it several times.
I dont think GM intended the lever to be that far off. Bowtieoverdrives write is very good as well as the pictures to help you see.

Hey, great to hear that. Like I said, I really don't know much about this, but I just could not "let it go" without at least making mention of what we did. I would hope someone would do the same for me, if there was a question in their mind.

No being impatieint, just seems that you want the lever to start at the front right on the plunger, and fully in when at WOT.

Okay, I'm no expert on this.......in fact, I'm as far from it as it gets, and I'm sure there are folks here that know whether that issue is a problem or not, however I just can't let this go without at least telling you what Trae and I got into with his 700R4. We had the exact same issue with the TV linkage..........and the instructions from Bow Tie Overdrive were explicit that the plunger had to extent all the way out, on it's own (if you could pull on it, and it would come further, it was not good)........that if it did not, it could cause a failure in the trans. Trae called them, told them what we had, and they recommended a Trans-Go kit to correct the problem. He got the kit, and we installed it, and it indeed forced the TV plunger to the end of it's travel. Now, like I said, this may not be a problem at all, but I would really feel bad if I didn't post something, and then later you came on here with a problem related to that.

So, from our experience only, and not from any other knowledge, claimed or otherwise, please take it for what it's worth.

Good luck!

As for their price, I'm sure the machining cost factors in, which I didn't incur....

Good morning to all CG's!

Yesterday was a very good day here, too! Wonderful sunny weather, and all went very well with Trae's C3. Nice clean shifts, all pressures good, temp nice and low..........I'd say the swap was a complete success. I must say, the Bow Tie Overdrive folks have their stuff together....from the great parts in the kit, to the "checklist" to use on the first test drive. I think Trae took some "in progress" pics during the whole process.....maybe he'll post them soon, if anyone is interested.

Today, it's finally MY turn! He's helping me install an X-pipe and do some underhood detailing (paint, etc.). Spring is one day closer!

Hope everyone has a great day!

Did you do the 700r4 swap yourselves? How bad was modifying the crossmember and welding it up to fit? We would like to do a 200r4 on my dad's 79, it is a much easier plug & play from what I've read.

Matthew

Yeah, Matt, we did the swap ourselves............with a little help from "Bow Tie Overdrive". We used their crossmember and shifter modification kit/TV cable setup. I'm not familiar with what's different about the 200R4, so I don't know if it's easier or not. It seems the key things are the TV cable adjustments and the converter lockup on the 700R4, and the BTO kit made all that very simple (if you follow directions..........which is pretty difficult for me sometimes! )

After the first test drive, we feel really good about it. It sure makes a difference in the car...........1st gear is lower, so it seems to launch better, and 1700 rpm at 60 mph should make gas mileage much better on our weekend cruises.

Big day today! I'm heading to Bristol shortly, to fire up and test drive Trae's '76, for the first time now that it has a 700R4 trans, and new rear suspension. Oh, and I almost forgot, the headlight doors are no longer vacuum operated........we built and installed an electric system for that task, which cleans up a bunch of vacuum hoses under the hood, not to mention making the headlights work better (the cam kinda reduced the vacuum ). Let's hope everything works like it's supposed to! Everyone have a great day!

I suppose as I get older, the "comfort" part, coupled with not having to spend as much time working on the car, as opposed to driving it, carries a lot of weight. Besides, I get plenty of "wrench time" on Trae's C3!

Well, I don't really have experience with actual problems related to this, but I will tell you what little I know. A good friend of mine has two C5s, a '98 couple and a '01 Z06. When I started looking for a C5, I asked about issues that may come up, and one of the things he told me about was your problem. He suggested that I replace the battery with an Optima (to prevent ever having any leakage) immediately after buying the car. The ECU on these cars is mounted in the well directly BELOW the battery (some real forward thinking there, huh?). This friend is an ASE certified tech, and has seen/heard of too many horror stories related to this, so I took his advice. Don't know if this is what happened to you or not, but I wanted to at least relay what little I know.

Good luck, and keep us posted!

The Black Street Rod model at the top was built by a very dear, and much missed, "late" friend of mine, Augie Hiscano. I've held that car in my hands, and I can tell you that pictures do not do it justice. It is over half metal, machined by the builder, and other parts are hammered sheet brass. And, it's 1:24 scale.

There are incredible craftsmen amoung us, and most times we don't even know it!
